All-New X-Men #2The newest volume of All-New X-Men continues to focus on the time-displaced X-Men from the past and the friends they have made in the present. Issue #2 gives us more of X-23 (renamed Wolverine now) and Angel‘s romance, but it’s primary focus is to catch up on the younger Cyclops who feels trapped following the death of his older self.

After hiding for weeks without using his powers Cyclops unleashes his power to fight off a group of young mutant thugs causing trouble under the name the “Ghosts of Cyclops.” The use of his powers not only allows his friends to finally locate him but also gets the character thrown into prison for his role in destroying the local library.

Daredevil #1

Daredevil #1For the third time in five years Daredevil relaunches in a new title. Since the last time I checked in on the character a lot has changed. Matt Murdoch has relocated back to New York from San Francisco, he’s somehow made the entire world (with the exception of Foggy Nelson) forget that he’s Daredevil, he’s taken on a protege in Blindspot, he’s altered his trademark red costume, and he has forsaken his role as a defense attorney to accept a position with the District Attorney’s office. That’s a lot of change (not all of it good).

ResultsWriter/director Andrew Bujalski‘s Results about a recently-wealthy client’s (Kevin Corrigan) impact on the lives of two personal trainers (Guy Pearce and Cobie Smulders) in Austin, Texas boasts a strong cast and an unique indie feel but suffers from not being funny enough to be a true comedy, dark enough to be dark comedy, or dramatic enough to be taken seriously. Results intermittently entertains while teasing the audience with a cast (that also includes Giovanni Ribisi, Anthony Michael Hall, and Constance Zimmer) that is far better than its source material.

Pearce is all-in as Trevor, the odd-duck owner of a local fitness center whose life is complicated by the employee he loves (Smulders) and the untethered client whose infatuation with the woman throws all their lives into chaos. Anthony Michael Hall has a small humorous role as the guru whose philosophy Trevor has based his entire business on. Trevor’s eventual encounter with his idol needs to be either funnier or more soul-crushing but, like the entire movie, the script flounders when hard choices must be made.

Supergirl - Fight or Flight

“Fight or Flight” is a hit-or-miss third episode to the series as Kara (Melissa Benoist) struggles both with her boss’ mean-spirited expose of the city’s new heroine and the arrival of one of Superman’s enemies Reactron (Chris Browning) who hopes to take down the Girl of Steel in order to teach Superman a lesson. The conceit of Supergirl is that Kara lives in a world where she’s just as good (but not really) as a more experienced and more seasoned hero with the exact same power set who she can’t interact with or learn from on-screen. As with the “Pilot” episode, a blurred version of Superman does make an appearance to help Supergirl out of a jam but lets his younger cousin fend for herself against a rather lame villain who seems far less unstoppable than we’re meant to believe.

Hard Target

This movie has Jean-Claude Van Damme punching a snake and Wilford Brimley, while sporting a Cajun accent, shooting arrows into people. More than 20 years after its release Hard Target feels every bit the B-movie early 1990s action flick it is. Notable for teaming up action star Van Damme (as an out-of-work Cajun soldier in Louisiana) and director John Woo (in his first American film) the film delivers audiences stunts, action sequences, and the large number of wide-eyed reaction shots from co-star Yancy Butler looking directly into the camera.

The story brings Natasha (Butler) to New Orleans in search of her missing father, a homeless veteran who was recrutied by a group of demented sprotsmen (Lance Henriksen, Arnold Vosloo, and others) who enjoy hunting humans for sport. A chance meeting, so to speak, with Chance Boudreaux (Van Damme), who is in need of some quick cash to get back to sea, leads the pair to team-up to investigate what really happened to the woman’s father and track down those responsible.
