Zero Day – Episode 1

  • Title: Zero Day – Episode 1
  • IMDb: link

The opening episode of Netflix’s Zero Day introduces us to former President George Mullen (Robert De Niro) who after a cyber attack is tapped by the current President (Angela Bassett) and given extraordinary powers to uncover those responsible. Presenting Mullen as the last politician who successfully bridged the two parties, the political thriller early on feels like a cautionary tale of the potential of abuse of power even in the best hands, with the problems of Hollywood not knowing how technology works and relying on “something bad happening involving computers” to be our boogeyman. Presenting Mullen as an unreliable protagonist in the first episode who is either being gaslight or is suffering from early-stage dementia (or possibly both) simply muddies the water before the show ever gets off the ground to very mixed results.

Captain America: Middling New World

  • Title: Captain America: Brave New World

Providing Sam Wilson‘s (Anthony Mackie) first big-screen appearance of Captain America, transforming President Thunderbolt Ross (Harrison Ford) into Red Hulk, and laying the some connective tissue between past and future films such as finally pulling on the Celestial thread left over from The Eternals, Captain America: Brave New World proves to be another middling entry to the MCU post Avengers: Endgame as I’m not sure making a good film, rather than a serviceable one, ever made it past the planning stage.

Ghosts of Mars

  • Title: John Carpenter’s Ghosts of Mars
  • IMDb: link

Not exactly the best of John Carpenter‘s career, Ghosts of Mars gives us Natasha Henstridge as the lone surviving member of a squad (which also includes Jason Statham and Pam Grier) on a terraformed Mars sent to retrieve a prisoner (Ice Cube) from a small mining town. Told mostly through flashbacks, with inserts for Lieutenant Melanie Ballard’s deposition, the officer tells an outrageous story that somehow doesn’t seem to raise any red flags for the tribunal who offer few questions, and even less skepticism, about her tale of miners possessed by Martian ghosts slaughtering an entire town.

Watson – Watson

  • Title: Watson – Watson
  • IMDb: link

Something akin to House with Sherlock Holmes trappings, the opening episode of Watson gives us Dr. John Watson (Morris Chestnut) starting up a cutting-edge clinic six-months after the deaths of Holmes and Professor Moriarty at Reichenbach Falls. The case of the week involves a pregnant woman (Anjelica Bette Fellini) believed to have a genetic disorder that will soon kill her, although Watson and his team begin to investigate alternatives as the episode runs through various false diagnoses before finding the true cause of her symptoms. Along the way we also get glimpses of Watson’s troubled relationship with his ex (Rochelle Aytes) who he abandoned to help Holmes on a final adventure that only Watson returned from.

Skeleton Crew – The Real Good Guys

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew somewhat mercifully comes to a close in the most Disney Channel finale one could have thought up. “The Real Good Guys” gives us the pirate invasion of At Attin, which does no real damage other than to some empty buildings, and the kids defeating Jod (Jude Law) and the pirates once more bringing the New Republic to mop up. By the end, all the parents have a better understanding and appreciation for their children, the hidden world is now back among the stars, the pirates are all captured, and everyone can live happily ever after. Awwww.
