Shelter

Shelter is far from the first film to play on the basic concept of letting sleeping dogs lie, but it does offer slightly more dramatic work for Jason Statham compared to some of his throwaway action sequences. We’re introduced to Mason (Statham) living in isolation on a small island in Scotland with this only ties to the outside world being a local fisherman and his niece Jessie (Bodhi Rae Breathnach) whose attempts to engage the mysterious stranger are rebuffed every time she brings him supplies.

Death on the Nile

I have many of the same issues with the 1978 adaptation of Agatha Christie‘s Death on the Nile as I did with Kenneth Branagh‘s version nearly half a century later. The first film to feature Peter Ustinov as renown detective Hercule Poirot is a dreadful bore that takes more than an hour to get going attempting to rely on beautiful shots of Egypt and overheard snippets conversations to build tepid tension as it treads water until the murder aboard the paddle steamer finally takes place.

Adapted from Stefanie London’s novel The Dachshund Wears Prada, Paws in the City has more bark than bite. The TV-movie casts Emeraude Toubia as failed social media consultant Issa, whose downfall we see early in the film. Needing a job and running into the new CEO of a publishing house whose grandmother left him a troublesome dachshund Camilla who seems to take to Issa, Theo (Carter Jenkins) hires her on the spot (despite his hatred of publicity in general and social media especially).

In typical romcom holiday style, we get big city executive Belinda Sawyer (Emeraude Toubia) heading west to broker a deal for her company to buy out a small local business in Santa Fe, New Mexico. One there, Belinda is charmed by the oldest son Tony (Mario Lopez) and their buiness while the rest of the family is far more unsure about giving up their autonomy.

The Dutchman

  • Title: The Dutchman
  • IMDb: link

An adaptation of the 1964 play (which was inspired by the myth of The Flying Dutchman), director Andre GainesThe Dutchman is social commentary wrapped up in a messy metaphysical metaphor that, while it has something to say on both the subject of being a successful Black man in America and on marital infidelity and temptation, is far more opaque than it should be except, perhaps, in Clay’s long monologues that are meant to offer cultural critique to the audience more than the film’s antagonist.
