Dragons: The Nine Realms – Dragon Club

  • Title: Dragons: The Nine Realms – Dragon Club
  • wiki: link

“Dragon Club” plays out largely like the second episode as another kid from the ICARIS research station is introduced to the hidden world of dragons, and saves and befriends a dragon of their own. This time it’s the reluctant D’Angelo (Marcus Scribner) who is dragged into Dragon Club (complete with an overt reference to Fight Club… for a kids show?) in order to help an injured Gembreaker dragon he will call his own by the end of the episode. The adults remain clueless as to what is going on, although Alex (Aimee Garcia) does make a discovery suggesting she will be the next introduced to Dragon Club.

Fireheart

  • Title: Fireheart
  • IMDb: link

Set in New York during the 1920s, L’Atelier Animation’s Fireheart stars Olivia Cooke as Georgia Nolan who has grown up dreaming of becoming a firefighter. When her father (Kenneth Branagh), retired firefighter turned tailor, is brought back by the department after the rest of the city’s firefighters go missing, Georgia sees her chance to live her dream in the gender-bending farce / coming of age story. Passing herself off as a male volunteer, Georgia discovers what being a firefighter is all about.

Relying on a host of goofy secondary characters including a narcoleptic cab driver, William Shatner as the city’s sleazy mayor, cute dog, and a villain with bizarre motives but seemingly endless supply of money and technology, along with a generic chasing your dreams kind of story, Fireheart is mostly forgettable fare with a nice message for young girls about breaking through the glass ceiling.

G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero #289

G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero #289 offers us a team-up of Agent Helix and Dawn “Snake Eyes” Moreno (are we still calling her Snake Eyes?). The formidable pair are in Louisiana on the hunt for Dr. Mindbender and Cobra’s new the base of Cobra’s new B.A.T. program run by Revanche.

I’m not wild about the art from Casey Maloney. Also, the comic is also mostly set-up, including a lame running gag about the two women making a local cop look like a chump, before finally our protagonists pit their skills against the new androids who prove to be more than capable while also be able to hide in plain sight (which Cobra plans to take advantage of by staffing the B.A.T.s throughout its casinos. The action is fine, once the comic finally gets around to it, but I was hoping for more finally seeing these two pair up.

The Endgame – Fairytale Wedding

  • Title: The Endgame – Fairytale Wedding
  • IMDb: link

The games, and stories, continue in the second episode of NBC’s The Endgame. For stories, we get the almost-wedding of Elena Federova (Morena Baccarin) and death of FBI Agent Val Fitzgerald’s (Ryan Michelle Bathe) mother. For games, Federova’s men kidnap the Secretary of Homeland Security’s son and use evidence from one of the banks to expose her corruption. The show continues the trend of Federova being three-steps ahead of everyone else including Fitzgerald who learns of another connection between the criminal mastermind and her incarcerated husband but still doesn’t know what it means.

Red Sonja: Black, White, Red #7

Red Sonja: Black, White, Red follows up one of the strongest issues of the black-and-white anthology with one of its weakest. The most interesting story of the three, “Sonja’s Gambit” involves a drugged Sonja tricked into a game by Queen Thamyris where Sonja finds herself as a figure on a chessboard with other living players forced into a game of life and death. Although it’s not clear if Sonja did obey the rules of the game, exactly, she still manages to win with the help of another pawn.

In a story that has ties to Sonja’s childhood, Sonja fights off werewolves in the forest to return the body of a nun she knew in her youth to be burned in a temple in “Unbowed.” And wounded Sonja makes a stand against a group of barbarians on a snowy mountainside in “Blood on Snow.”
