A Wrinkle in Time

A Wrinkle in Time movie reviewI don’t know if writing the original story required heavy doses of LSD, but I have a hard time believing that there wasn’t some serious drug use putting this film together. Based on Madeleine L’Engle‘s 1962 novel of the same name, A Wrinkle in Time stars Storm Reid as troubled teenager who, along with her younger brother Charles Wallace (Deric McCabe), heads of on a fantastical adventure with three total strangers (Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, and Mindy Kaling) who inform the children that their missing father (Chris Pine) is alive, trapped in a far off world, and needs their help. Oh, and Meg’s classmate (Levi Miller), who isn’t really even a friend, comes along as well. Because why not?

The film’s strengths lie in its overabundance of CGI and young stars. While somewhat emotionally empty, the settings which Meg finds herself in are visually appealing (even if it appears there’s little actual thought put in to how things work). While the various adult actors appear to be having fun making a kid’s film, all the emotional weight is left for Reid to shoulder. And McCabe succeeds in jumping from quirky to downright creepy when required.

Vampirella #10

Vampirella #10 comic reviewOkay, I’ve never been much of a horror comic reader in general nor a Vampirella fan in particular. That said, when a comic chooses to celebrate one of my favorite cosplayers with a variant cover I’m all-in to show some support. Way to go Joanie!

For those, like me, a little unsure what they are stepping into, writer Jeremy Whitley does a good job setting the stage for the dystopian future where our heroic vampire now lives and offering a backstory for Pantha who plays a major role in the current plotline. It seems the future is a pretty screwed up shitstorm where no one can die and old friends want you dead.

Beyond - Two Zero One / Cheers, Bitch

Beyond returns for a Second Season with Holden (Burkely Duffield) attempting to live a normal life by taking a job in his father’s factory and date Willa (Dilan Gwyn) – despite how her family used him and the nightmares that continue to plague him. It’s nice to see Charlie (Eden Brolin) return, although it seems like her current path on digging up dirt for Yellow Jacket (Peter Kelamis) will be keeping her away from Holden for the time being. Instead we get Willa attending an awkward family dinner and still showing more chemistry with Holden’s brother than her actual boyfriend.

Supergirl #17

Supergirl #17 comic reviewMost of the action in Supergirl #17 comes from Supergirl‘s battle with the super-powered Starshame who takes a more murdery view of fighting crime than the Girl of Steel. The arrival of the DEO ends the battle prematurely, although not before Supergirl has the situation well in hand.

While not a consistent reader of this comic, I often forget how different this version of Kara is than that on the Supergirl television show (which it could take several notes from). While I don’t mind Kara being separate from the DEO, I’m completely unsure of the shadowy agency’s motives without her. And keeping Kara in high school where she has to worry about things like the boy who she’s not sure if she wants him to ask her to the high school dance proves far less interesting than a more independent millennial attempting to make her way in the world.
