Firestarter

With the release of a new adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, Flashback Friday takes a look back at 1984’s Firestarter starring a young Drew Barrymore as a child with the power to start fires with her mind. Definitely of its time, the 80s adaptation would likely be totally forgotten except for Barrymore’s involvement. To be fair, the goofy plot doesn’t fit the rather straightforward telling of a man (David Keith) and his wife (Heather Locklear in limited screen time) experimented on in college by a secret government organization who have passed on even stronger powers to their young daughter.

The Magic Sword

  • Title: The Magic Sword
  • IMDb: link

The goofy 60s fantasy film The Magic Sword stars Gary Lockwood as an orphan raised by a sorceress (Estelle Winwood) who steals a number of magical gifts from his foster mother to save the princess (Anne Helm) he’s fallen in love with from afar when she is abducted by an evil sorcerer (Basil Rathbone) who has a habit of kidnapping princesses and feeding them to his dragon. Armed with a magic sword, armor, and steed, along with chivalrous knights, Sir George begins his quest to fight through the seven curses put in place by the sorcerer while also dealing with a traitor in his midst.

The magical effects, as you may guess, are pretty limited for the time and haven’t aged that well, likely one of the reasons the movie earned a spot on Mystery Science Theater 3000 (although two of the characters admitted it was better than they expected).

Overdrive

An obvious attempt to take advantage of the popularity of the Fast & Furious franchise, 2017’s Overdrive offers a tale of car thieves in over their head. Aside from the short opening heist, which provides a look at the skills of brothers Andrew (Scott Eastwood) and Garrett (Freddie Thorp), the film races in fits and starts continuing pushing off the promised big heist with various subplots that are constantly mucking up the story. While we eventually get the heist we’re promised, by the time it happens does anyone still care?

Stealing from the wrong man (Simon Abkarian), Andrew and Garrett are forced to put together a crew to steal from an even more dangerous man (Clemens Schick). Rather than just move forward with that plot we get the pair making deals with the second target, facing retribution from old enemies, dealing with romantic entanglements, being investigated by Interpol, and on and on.

Knock Knock

  • Title: Knock Knock
  • IMDb: link

2015’s Knock Knock fits into the subgenre of male fantasy gone wrong having some similarities to 2006’s Hard Candy. The set-up, which could only occur on film, involves an architect (Keanu Reeves) being visited by two beautiful stranded bisexual nymphomaniacs (Ana de Armas and Lorenza Izzo) on the rainy night his wife (Ignacia Allamand) and children (Dan Baily and Megan Baily) have left for warmer climates. It’s not long before the the two young woman lose their clothing and begin making increasingly obvious advances to their host.

The first half-hour sets the scene with the pair working a little too hard to seduce the family man, while stealing glances letting us know more is a foot which becomes suddenly evident to Evan the morning after when the pair announce they have no plans on leaving and the mind games take darker and darker (and more ridiculous) turns.

WWE Royal Rumble 2022

  • Title: Royal Rumble (2022)

Continuing its stumble towards WrestleMania, the 2022 Royal Rumble offered few surprises, a number of older faces, a glut of mid-card talent,  the absence of several big names, and a smattering of “celebrity” appearances.

Brock Lesnar, after being cheated out of the title in a match earlier in the evening, entered the lackluster main event Men’s Royal Rumble Match securing his spot against Roman Reigns (who successfully defended his title earlier in the evening against Seth Rollins) in the main event at WrestleMania. The Woman’s Rumble wasn’t much more interesting, nor was the winner any shock to fans, but did feature a number of former WWE Superstars returning including Melina, Kelly Kelly, Mickie James, and Sarah Logan.
