No one can be told what Elvis is. You must see it for yourself. Now, to be clear, I cannot recommend Elvis to anyone. That said, I selfishly want people to see one of the most bizarre movie experiences I have ever had in a theater, if only so I can discuss what I still can’t quite put into words. What I witnessed, nearly three hours worth, simply defies description. It’s a mesmerizing train wreck of a film that makes psychotic choices in character, tone, and plot with disastrous results. And, yet, I couldn’t look away.

Dark Crisis #1

After all the various set-up and lead-in issues, Dark Crisis begins here with a memorial to the ten fallen members of the Justice League of America who perished during their fight against the Great Darkness. The issue jumps around a bit with Superman’s son struggling to create a new Justice League from the heroes that are left, Hal Jordan returning to Earth far from satisfied with Black Adam‘s recounting of events on how the Justice League died, and Deathstroke leading a mass of villains against Titans Tower to kill those who might step-up to take the place of the fallen heroes.

Shadow War Zone #1

Part of the current Shadow War crossover, Shadow War Zone #1 is an overpriced issue will filler back-up stories in an attempt to justify its $6 cover price. They don’t. The main storyline involves Black Canary setting out to find Deathstroke but instead running into one of Talia al Ghul‘s assassins who wants Canary’s help in hunting down and killing the mercenary and isn’t willing to take no for an answer. There’s not too much of interest about the unfortunately named Angel Breaker other than that she gets the upper-hand on Dinah on multiple occasions.

More than once while watching Chip ‘n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers I wondered to myself who this movie is for? The short-lived TV-series which ran from 1989-1990 gets a reboot of sorts here in a bizarre set up which mergers two-dimensional animated characters, three-dimensional CGI characters, and real actors. It’s kind of like Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, in terms of setup and a mystery to be solved, except it never finds a way to blend its various elements into a cohesive whole.

With the release of a new adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, Flashback Friday takes a look back at 1984’s Firestarter starring a young Drew Barrymore as a child with the power to start fires with her mind. Definitely of its time, the 80s adaptation would likely be totally forgotten except for Barrymore’s involvement. To be fair, the goofy plot doesn’t fit the rather straightforward telling of a man (David Keith) and his wife (Heather Locklear in limited screen time) experimented on in college by a secret government organization who have passed on even stronger powers to their young daughter.
