Percy Jackson and the Olympians – I Play Dodgeball with Cannibals

Created more as obstacles than people, I had forgotten how aggravating all the supporting characters of Percy Jackson and the Olympians could be whether they be friend or foe. The DNA of these stories is that no one is capable of taking on the challenge outside of our hero and his friends, mostly through neglect, casual disinterest, or sheer stupidity. Percy Jackson and the Olympians is back, and little has changed.

After the Hunt

I don’t understand the point of After the Hunt, and, after seeing it, I’m not sure anyone involved in making it knows either. Set at Yale, we get a he said/she said script from the perspective of neither character involved in an alleged assult that happens off-camera.

Instead, our main character is a mostly self-absorbed professor (Julia Roberts) who is the mentor of the a potentially untrustworthy woman (Ayo Edebiri) who we see steal from the professor early on claiming she was sexually assaulted, and at the same time the best friend of notably flirtatious man (Andrew Garfield) who suggests the young woman made up the entire story for attention and to deflect from her largely plagiarized work.

A bit frozen by events, and honestly more concerned about her own illegal drug use and getting tenure, Roberts’ character is given plenty of reason to question what might have happened (although, honestly, I’m not sure she cares).

A less successful adaptation of the Parker novels than that of Jason Statham (there’s a sentence you don’t hear often), Mark Wahlberg stars in what is easily the worst, and most bland, Shane Black movie ever made. After a heist gone wrong, Parker (Wahlberg) works with the duplicitous Zen (Rosa Salazar) on an even larger heist which will pit him against his old enemy Lozini (Tony Shalhoub) and the Outfit.

After spending more than 15 years in development hell, this post-apocalyptic action flick finally sees the light of day. Set a decade after the world has fallen into chaos when a solar flare destroys most of the world’s technology, and various warlords arise to fight over what is left, Dave Bautista stars as a treasure hunter who continues to put his skills to work finding rare and lost items for the local would-be king (Samuel L. Jackson).

Fuck Marry Kill

I really do root for Lucy Hale, but she doesn’t make it easy. Fuck Marry Kill is a middling romantic comedy spliced together with a below-average thriller that leaves everyone unsatisfied. Hale stars as 30 year-old Eva who jumps back in to the dating scene after the end of a long relationship (with a doofus we can’t possibly see her spending 8 minutes with let alone 8 years) just as a serial killer is targeting young women from dating apps. While the killer is discussed early on, most of the first-half of the film follows Eva meeting three bachelors and discovering she’s walked into the classic Fuck, Marry, Kill scenario with her friends (Virginia Gardner, Bethany Brown, and JayR) and sister (Brooke Nevin) all having differing opinions on who she should end up with.
