“Mayor Mayhem” continues as the corrupt former Gotham City Mayor Emerson Mayfield’s candidacy to reclaim the office continues to gain support. With something obviously fishy about how quickly the notorious scoundrel is winning people to his sides, Barbara joins the campaign looking for answers and Mayfield calls in a specialist to deal with Batman.

Batman recognizes the disguised Clayface as his attacker, but he’s safely locked up behind bars at Arkham Asylum. And later Clayface escapes to attack Batman again! And Barbara discovers he isn’t the only escapee working for the campaign (which also explains the ex-mayor’s sudden rise in popularity). But is there enough time to reveal the truth before Mayfield and the Bat-villains can steal the election?

Black Widow #12

Calling in a couple of friends in Bucky Barnes and Clint Baton, Natalie rounds up the girls and hits the Golden Gate Gala where she’s been told there’s information to be found and something far more nefarious underneath the upscale atmosphere. Ditching the party early, Lucy and Anya uncover a bizarre secret auction in the basement of the building before going silent leading to the Widows going to Plan B and taking a more direct approach to uncover just what the hell is going on.

There’s a lot of slow building set-up here, but eventually things get interesting. Although her Spidey-sense (so to speak) is aroused the entire evening, Black Widow is unprepared for what, or more precisely who, she finds. Whoever the Living Blade is, Natasha has tangled with him before (and he’s certainly made an impression).

Checkmate #5

Picking up exactly where Checkmate #4 ended, Leviathan has invaded Checkmate‘s headquarters, which they then teleport into the middle of Thailand. Although their building is rubble, the heroes aren’t quite out of the game as Mark Shaw had planned, thanks to King‘s use of the extra-dimensional doors which deliver them into the basement of the Hall of Justice with hopefully enough time to prevent Leviathan from getting their hands on the Heroes Network.

And, of course, this turns out to be the perfect opportunity for Talia to double-cross the heroes. It’s still not clear what exactly she’s getting out of helping Shaw, but incapacitating the heroes at the point they might stop him from realizing his goal certainly works in Leviathan’s favor.

Lois Lane is fairing a bit better with the sudden appearance of a brother she never knew about, but the “Snowman’s Ticket” is still a git of a mystery, except, perhaps to Mark Shaw.

In “We Were Just Babies” the truth about Sam’s (Crew Kingston Miskel) father is revealed when the show returns to Gabby (Simone Recasner) and Justin’s (Raymond Cham Jr.) high school bringing Gabby’s oldest secret to light by revealing her favorite teacher took advantage of her and then promptly dumped Gabby when she became pregnant with his child. The long-running thread has a far better payoff than I expected, and also gives us a look at the crew discussing what’s best to do with this information, both for Gabby and for the show, ultimately giving Gabby a strong moment to stand-up for herself.

Wonder Woman: Black & Gold #5

Wonder Woman: Black & Gold #5 offers black and white tales, with a flourish of gold, featuring Wonder Woman. My favorite of the tales, “Feet of Clay,” is told from the point of view of the Amazons’ greatest general, Antiope, who is reluctantly brought out of retirement to train Hippolyta‘s precocious young daughter molded from clay and given life by the gods (keeping with Wonder Woman’s original origin). The story highlights the pair’s unique relationship, and the similarities the two warrior women share.

In “Hellzapoppin'” Diana visits Hephaestus only to discover the forge of the gods in disarray leading to battle through Hell in a search for her missing friend.  Ships of Themyscira are attacked by a sea ghost in “Beyond the Horizon” and a confrontation with a spirit in torment deep in the ocean’s depths.
