Megan Leavey movie reviewBased on the true story of US Marine Corporal Megan Leavey and her four-legged partner Rex who served two deployments in Iraq finding hidden explosive devices and insurgent weapons, Kate Mara stars as a lost young woman who finds purpose as a K9 handler. With the potential pitfalls of being both an uplifting military tale and a movie about a woman and her dog, director Gabriela Cowperthwaite and screenwriters Pamela Gray, Annie Mumolo, and Tim Lovestedt do a fair bit of work to not let things get too schmaltzy over the film’s 116-minute running time (although at certain times in the film this becomes a losing battle).

As someone who doesn’t mind a little schmaltz, as long as it serves the story (and it certainly does here), Megan Leavey delivers an engaging tale. Kate Mara may not be the typical idea of a Marine, but Leavey’s story is hardly typical and the casting works. While she and the dog are the true stand-outs here, a grizzled Bradley Whitford (who it took me a moment to recognize) steals a scene or two as Megan’s father. Harry Potter‘s Tom Felton also has a small role as a fellow dog handler. Less effective are the one-note performances of Edie Falco and Will Patton as Megan’s mother and her boyfriend.

“Watching my zombie roommate talk to a ghost? That’s just what I call a Tuesday.”

iZombie - Return of the Dead Guy television review

With no murder to solve this week the characters of iZombie have to find other ways to pass the time. For Liv (Rose McIver) that means hallucinating her old boyfriend after munching down on the brains of killer for Peyton (Aly Michalka). This puts more than a little crimp in her new relationship with Justin (Tongayi Chirisa). Major (Robert Buckley) has no such problems as his days and nights are full of lust and debauchery with his new friend Shawna (Sarah Jurgens). Ravi‘s (Rahul Kohli) time with the zombie truthers is a little less sexy now that they’ve captured Don E (Bryce Hodgson) and plan to expose the truth about zombies on a livestream. Oh, and Blaine (David Anders) gets an unexpected visit from his old boss.

“I must now use an ancient Vulcan technique to probe into Van Gelder’s tortured mind.”

Star Trek - Dagger of the Mind TV review

This week’s Throwback Thursday post takes us boldly back to where no man had gone before. In “Dagger of the Mind” a relatively simple cargo drop-off at a penal colony on Tantalus V leads to the discovery of something sinister once the former head of the institute stows away aboard the Enterprise. Seeking answers, Kirk (William Shatner) and Dr. Helen Noel (Marianna Hill) beam to the surface to have a look around for themselves. There they discover the doctor in charge is using a neural neutralizer not only to calm the patients but also alter people’s memories which Dr. Adams (James Gregory) uses on Kirk in an attempt to control the captain by implanting memories of a fake tryst with Helen who is then put in danger. Kirk breaks free of the conditioning long enough to turn the tables on his tormentor who gets a deadly taste of his own medicine.

Pretty Little Liars - The Glove That Rocks the Cradle television review

While Aria (Lucy Hale) gets her first real assignment from A.D., the rest of the Liars rally around Spencer (Troian Bellisario) who has become Marco‘s (Nicholas Gonzalez) number-one suspect in the murder of Archer Dunhill. Despite the Liars‘ attempts to obscure facts or Spencer’s heartfelt plea to Marco, it doesn’t seem that he’s going to give up this investigation any time soon. With Aria destroying the new baby room, while also dealing with the stress of the publisher’s idea for a Nicole-centric approach of Ezra‘s (Ian Harding) and her book, and Spencer getting grilled by her recent lover, it’s hard to say which has the rougher go of things.

Detective Comics #957

Detective Comics #957 comic reviewWith the extended arc surrounding the invasion of Gotham first by an army of Batmen an then by the League of Shadows, Detective Comics has let the actions of Spoiler fall through the cracks. Detective Comics #957 picks up this thread to let us in on what Stephanie Brown has been up to since the apparent death of Tim Drake.

Obviously still in mourning, the vigilante has come up with a plan to focus attention away from Batman and the Bat-Family by solving crimes and giving the GCPD all the credit. It’s an odd plan, but fits in with her role of “spoiler” I guess. It also gives her an outlet to use her pain for good rather than misguidedly taking on or harming any member of the Bat-Family directly. Of course there is glaring error in her plan: mostly Batman doesn’t take credit for what he does, meaning her actions might not amount to what she hopes. Also the lure of Batman, and the fear he causes the lesser-criminals of Gotham City, isn’t to be ignored.
