Elementary - Moving Targets television review

Elementary makes a surprising move with a storyline they’ve slowly been building this season. Given Shinwell‘s (Nelsan Ellis) recent attack on Holmes (Jonny Lee Miller) I expected something to shift. With the skills Shinwell had picked by Sherlock, and how well he appeared to be putting them to use for his own ends, I half-expected the former gangbanger to decide to take over, rather than destroy, it from within. This would not only create a new adversary for Holmes and Watson (Lucy Liu) but also provide a constant source of grief for the pair in knowing they are responsible. Instead, Shinwell’s death shifts the focus of the season in an entirely different direction by turning the detectives’ attention to the gang which is likely responsible for the man’s murder.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 movie review

Less ambitious than the original film, the sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy attempts to focus a bit more on relationships and family while, of course, still leaving plenty of time for hijinks and misadventure. As he proved in Guardians of the Galaxy, writer/director James Gunn is right at home with the later, but if the sequel has a major weakness it’s that more subtle emotion isn’t his forte.

Not to take anything away from the sequel which proves to be an enjoyable summer romp, but Gunn struggles mightily during emotional beats which are hamfistedly repeated, underlined, bolded, recalled, and given at least three exclamation marks. While this works for the bawdier humor, exploring the relationships between Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and her sister Nebula (Karen Gillan) or Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) and relationships to both his long-lost father (Kurt Russell) and his surrogate father Yondu (Michael Rooker) in repetitive exposition leads to some awkward scenes that drag on far too long. And, because there’s not much to the script other than a focus on these relationships, it’s hard not to be at least a little disappointed in Vol. 2.

The Flash - I Know Who You Are television review

In an episode primarily focused on Team Flash trying to keep Killer Frost (Danielle Panabaker) from killing the scientist (Anne Dudek) who will one day create a way to trap Savitar in the Speed Force, “I Know Who Are” also delivers the long-awaited reveal of the identity of the season’s big bad. It’s somewhat less impressive than intended. Over the months since the character’s initial appearance there have been many theories about just who is under that armor and what his true motivations are. I never liked the theory of Savitar being an older version of Barry (Grant Gustin) where other more interesting options were available. However, that seems what we’re stuck with. Of course by with the big reveal the show does open a major plot hole. If Barry truly wants to keep his love safe from harm he can make the same sacrifice Eddie made back in the show’s First Season making it impossible for an older version of himself to kill Iris (Candice Patton).

Supergirl - Alex television review

While the show’s B-story continues to slowly develop a relationship between Lena Luther (Katie McGrath) and Rhea (Teri Hatcher) leading into the show’s season finale, most of “Alex” is devoted to the abduction of Kara‘s (Melissa Benoist) sister by a childhood acquaintance who discovered her secret and now hopes to leverage it to get Supergirl to break his father (Gregg Henry) out of prison. How far will Supergirl go to save her sister?
