Doctor Who - Hell Bent

The final episode of Series Nine returns The Doctor (Peter Capaldi) to Gallifrey, although the episode turns out to be more about Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman) than the Time Lords. I had a very mixed reaction to “Hell Bent” which immediately undercuts the emotion of Clara’s death, and the power of her sacrifice, by The Doctor using his return to Gallifrey to find a way to cheat death and bring her back. Using the Time Lord’s technology to pull Clara out of the final moment of her timeline, The Doctor saves his companion one last time.

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. - Closure

Ward (Brett Dalton) killing Rosalind Price (Constance Zimmer) and Gideon Malick‘s (Powers Boothe) plans to re-open a portal shift the focus of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. back to Hydra as the show heads into next week’s fall finale. Angering Coulson (Clark Gregg) and tricking him into putting Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) and Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) into harms way allows the villain to capture his former teammates and force their cooperation in Malick’s plans. Although Simmons is under the impression Hydra wants to bring back the unseen force from the planet on which she was stranded, and knowing how the show’s writers think after two and a half seasons, I’m betting Will (Dillon Casey) turns out to actually be Hydra’s secret weapon just waiting to be transported home.

Secret Six #8

Secret Six #8With a wide range of magical folks across the DCU targeting Black Alice, Catman and his teammates have a decision to make. Do they step in and try to help their new friend? And if so what is the proper action to take? Should the pillars that make up the White Gate be protected? Or should they be destroyed.

Memorable for Black Alice making several characters her bitch in the middle of her hospital stay and an unexpected undersea battle between Catman and Aquaman (much to the delight of Thomas Blake’s teammates), Secret Six #8 also offers the return of Scandal Savage, Ragdoll, and Jeannette as Gail Simone continues to toy with fans of the original group and tease the idea of the real band getting back together.

Once Upon a Time - Broken Heart

“Broken Heart” wraps up the Camelot flashbacks in an episode that focuses on Hook (Colin O’Donoghue) taking naturally to his role as a Dark One both in Camelot and in Storybrooke following the return of his memory. We witness the casting to the curse, the reasoning behind Emma’s mindwipe of her friends and family, and the death of Merlin (Elliot Knight) and the hands of the Dark Ones. With Emma‘s (Jennifer Morrison) plans in shambles she have to do what she can to win back the trust of her loved ones starting with Henry (Jared Gilmore).

Darth Vader #12

Darth Vader #12Wrapping up the series’ second arc, Darth Vader is able to turn events to his advantage and convince Imperial Inspector Thanoth to ignore some thief who stole a few credits from the Empire and focus the fleet’s attention on the threat of the rebel group operating on the Outer Rim known as the Plasma Devils. Once again the Dark Lord of the Sith narrowly avoids Aphra‘s apprehension along with any possibility of her actions being tied back to him.

Given her ability to reveal Vader’s betrayal of the Empire, the only part of Darth Vader #12 that rings hollow is his decision to keep the thief alive. While I’m sure writer Kieron Gillen has more plans for Aphra, and has spent considerable time developing the character, the natural decision for Vader would be to kill the woman immediately.
