Legends - The Legend of Dmitry Petrovich

Following the events of last season’s finale in which Martin (Sean Bean) was framed for a murder he didn’t commit, Legends begins its Second Season which is a major departure from the structure of the show’s First Season. Hiding out in London, Martin continues to try and piece together his past while searching for someone inside MI6 who may have answers to his past. The only other regular from the previous season to make an appearance is Morris Chestnut as Tony Rice who shows up in London under the premise of a vacation with his family in order to deliver his former colleague some intelligence which may aid Martin in his search.

SpyMelissa McCarthy stars as a CIA analyst forced into the field when an arms dealer (Rose Byrne) with knowledge of all the CIA’s operatives acquires a nuclear bomb and plans to sell it on the black market. I’m far from McCarthy’s biggest fan whose poor script choices have made me more than once refer to her as the female Kevin James. However, with Spy the comedienne’s talents are put to good use by writer/director Paul Feig which is odd because the script shares quite a bit in common with the far-less enjoyable Get Smart reboot from a few years back. Along with McCarthy, Feig balances the talents of Byrne, Jude Law, and a very funny Jason Statham as the alpha-male spy who is his own biggest fan in a comedy far funnier than I was expecting.

Hawaii Five-0‘s latest Halloween episode begins with the discovery of the severed body parts of four female victims leading Five-0 on the search for a serial killer who, in Frankensteinish fashion, is reconstructing the love his his life piece by piece. The show definitely loves going for the macabre in its Halloween episodes and “Na Pilikua Nui” is no exception as it leads McGarrett (Alex O’Loughlin) and Grover (Chi McBride) to an isolated farm house where the Navy S.E.A.L. will fight for his life against the mad man determined to reconstruct his lost love from the body parts of his various victims.

Despite introducing both a new hero and villain while searching for a suitable candidate to merge with Dr. Stein (Victor Garber) and calm the unstable Firestorm Matrix, and spending most of the rest of the episode dealing with Iris (Candice Patton) and her family drama given the unexpected return of her mother (Vanessa Williams), “The Fury of Firestorm” hides its best moments on the periphery of the storyline of the week. Don’t get me wrong, I think Franz Drameh did a fine job as Jefferson “Jax” Jackson, and I like the look of the new Firestorm slightly better than the original (although it could still us a little more comic book styling), and I wouldn’t mind seeing Demore Barnes return as Tomahawk, but “Fury of Firestorm” saves its best for last.

The public execution of a defendant during his deposition by a motorcyclist leads Five-0 to look into a group of stunt drivers notable not only for multiple moving violations but also for the hijacking of several trucks over the past few months. While initial information seems to suggest one of the group was hired to the local Samoan mob the truth is far more complicated and the reason behind the killing far more personal.
