Bond is Back (and he’s brought the Joker with him)!

skyfall-posterI wasn’t the biggest fan of Quantum of Solace which I felt stayed far too focused on the fallout of the first movie in the reboot James Bond franchise without moving our new version of British Secret Agent James Bond (Daniel Craig) forward. Skyfall certainly isn’t a perfect Bond film, in fact it may be the first of the franchise that I’ve enjoyed without liking its choice of villain. However, it does make a concerted effort to blend in elements of the classic Bond franchise with the new version making it feel, really for the first time, that James Bond is truly back.

The film borrows heavily from themes, elements, and even specific props from previous Bond movies. Some of these callbacks include the Aston Martin from Goldfinger, a signature gun (which we saw before in Licence to Kill), an assassin’s with signature bullets (a major plot point used in The Man with the Golden Gun), and even the recreation of M’s classic office. The movie also begins incorporating Bond’s original supporting cast including finally delivering a new Q (Ben Whishaw).

“He blames me for the death of his daughter. He also thinks I dress up in a green hood and shoot people with arrows.”

arrow-damaged

After being arrested by Detective Lance (Paul Blackthorne) on suspicion of being Starling City’s new vigilante, Oliver (Stephen Amell) denies any assistance Walter (Colin Salmon) and his mother (Susanna Thompson) can offer and demands the only lawyer he can trust to defend him – Laurel (Katie Cassidy). Believing in Oliver’s innocence, and sure the self-centered rich boy she’s known her entire life is no do-gooder, Laurel agrees to take the case even if it means squaring off against her father over the man he still blames for the death of Laurel’s sister.

The discovery of a carefully planned abduction leading to a brutal ritualistic murder on Halloween night makes the Five-0 Task Force believe their killer is only getting started. Max’s (Masi Oka) autopsy of the victim shows she was kept alive while the killer carefully removed several of her vital organs. The killer made no attempt to keep the organs viable for black market sale or transplant. He simply enjoyed his work.

Winter Soldier #12

winter-soldier-12-coverWith the Black Widow‘s life on the line Bucky has no choice but to agree to let himself be reprogrammed by Novokov’s scientist and once again become the mindless killer known only as the Winter Soldier.

As Captain America and S.H.I.E.L.D. scientists attempt to decipher the programming and objective Novokov has implanted into Bucky’s head, Wolverine and Hawkeye are called in to stop him before he can complete his mission. As they soon discover, that’s easier said than done.

Presented mostly from Wolverine’s perspective hunting down a former friend who’s even more dangerous than he remembers, the comic works fairly well. Why Cap isn’t in the field helping them isn’t made clear, and because of the structure we get little of Natasha as well. (However, what we do get seems to foreshadow how this arc will end.)

The choice to send Bucky after Daredevil seems an odd one from the Soviet sleeper-soldier’s point of view, but it should provide plenty of action for the next issue. Worth a look.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #15

tmnt-15-coverRealizing there is only so long they can remain hidden above ground while staying in the apartment building belonging to April‘s father the Turtles scour the city for a new subterranean home. What the Turtles don’t realize is as they hunt for a new home they are being hunted as well.

The comic opens by showcasing the origin of a new mutated turtle from Stockton Research Incorporated Laboratories who escapes containment, and causes havoc around town before beginning to hunting down the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

I’m still not sold on Andy Kuhn’s art, but the story, after the origin of the new mutant to prowl the city streets, moves at a good pace and I enjoyed the banter between the Turtles throughout.

I was surprised to see the comic reintroduce Slash so early in its run. His new origin is certainly more in line with the current comic (and far less confusing than trying to reintroduce him as an eco-terrorist from another dimension) and the first battle with his Turtle-brethren is certainly action-packed. Worth a look.
