I can’t think of any movie that’s left me so completely incapable of looking at it objectively as Revenge of the Sith has done.  I’m that kid that grew up with nearly every single Star Wars toy.  I read the Marvel comics, I bought the books, hell…I even have the Star Wars Christmas Special.  This is a movie that I’ve waited for 21 years to see.  It’s entirely possible that no film could ever live up to what I want from the last Star Wars film, no matter how it was handled, but my expectations have been tempered by the lackluster elements of Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones.

For those of you who might have spent the last year living in a cave, Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith details the destruction of the Jedi, the rise of the Galactic Empire, and the descent of Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) from idealistic Jedi to heartless Sith Lord Darth Vader. The conflicts hinted at in Attack of the Clones have blown into full-scale war, with the Republic fighting off a droid separatist movement.

Georgia Rule movie review

Many times you go into a film with certain expectations and are let down; however, once in awhile you get the reverse.  I had little hope for Georgia Rule which I expected to be nothing more than your average chick flick.  Imagine my shock when I found a surprisingly intelligent film with strong performances from all three of the its leading actresses.

Rachel (Linday Lohan) is driving everyone nuts.  Unable to control her daughter, Lily (Felicity Huffman) ships her off to her grandmother, Georgia (Jane Fonda) in a small Iowa town, hoping some of the sternness, which rubbed her wrong in her own childhood, might work for Rachel.

Her arrival instantly effects the sleepy town and her rebellious nature chafes under the strict control of her grandmother, the animosity of the local girls (Christine Lakin, Chelse Swain, Mandy Medlin), the interest of a young Morman (Garrett Hedlund) and the fatherly advice of an old friend of her mother (Dermot Mulroney).

How to Kill Your Wife and Get Away With It

Fracture movie reviewWhile Fracture isn’t a great film it is a compelling and fun ride including good performances and a script which will keep you guessing similar to 2003’s Runaway Jury.  Featuring a pair of great actors in plum roles it’s the type of film you enjoy watching, even if you can punch holes in some of the plot points later on.

On discovering his wife (Embeth Davidtz) is having an affair with a police detective (Billy Burke) Ted Crawford (Anthony Hopkins) coldly plans her murder.  But instead of an intricate plan or an ironclad alibi he simply walks up to her at home, shoots her in the head, and then waits for the police to arrive.

Willy Beachum (Ryan Gosling), a young Assistant District Attorney with one foot out the door for a new cushy corporate job working under a beautiful woman (Rosamund Pike), is assigned the case.  There’s evidence, a confession, and Stevens even plans on defending himself.  Slamdunk.

Justice League Unlimited – Season Two

justice-league-unlimited-season-two-dvdAfter peaking when the show was re-launched as Justice League Unlimited Season One, which included wrapping up most of the storylines and putting a coda to end the series, the show was renewed for a final 13 episodes. 

Since all the large story arcs had been played out, Season Two would be about Villains, unfinished business, Villains, traveling to new parts of the DCU including Central City, Skartaris, and Nanga Parbat, and, did I mention, Villains.  Superman would finally cut loose, Batman would crack a joke, the Flash would take on his rogues gallery, Lex Luthor would search for Braniac, Hawkman would (finally!) show up, Supergirl traveled to the future to meet the Legion, Darkseid returned, oh, and there was this new storyline based of the Challenge of the SuperFriends and the Legion of Doom.

A Nation Mourns

the-queen-posterAfter the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, a country mourns.  Queen Elizabeth II (Helen Mirren) struggles with dealing with the personal loss of her family with the grieving country that wants solace and comfort from their sovereign.

The new Prime Minister, Tony Blair (Michael Sheen), tries to counsel the Queen to fight her nature and stoic resolve and allow the country to take part in the mourning of Diana’s death.

Stephen Frears gives us a behind the scenes looks at a power struggle between a modern man and a woman who’s refinement seems to be preventing her from what her country needs.  The film is shot in a way to allow real footage to be mixed into the film, including images and interviews with Diana herself.

Frears understands the delicacy of the issue involved and at no point does he try to trivialise or sensationalize the events.  He shows both a nation and family dealing with death in their own way.
