Avatar: Fire and Ash

I quite enjoyed 2009’s Avatar which, despite its simple setup, brought an immersive experience on an alien world to life. While still an enjoyable popcorn movie, I was less impressed with 2022’s Avatar: The Way of Water which followed the Sully clan, still hounded by human armed forces, to new lives as part of a Na’vi water tribe. Avatar: Fire and Ash feels very much a continuation of the second movie, continuing the story of the Sully clan against a very familiar antagonist.

The Smashing Machine showcases the life and career of former MMA fighter Mark Kerr (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson) who was one of the biggest names in the sport during the late 1990s. More notable for The Rock’s performance than any details of Kerr’s life, in or out of the ring, the film showcases the fighter overcoming substance abuse, the precipitous fall following his first loss, and the contentious relationship with his girlfriend (Emily Blunt).

The Running Man

  • Title: The Running Ma (2025)
  • IMDb: link

A more faithful adaptation to the original Stephen King story than the 1987 film, albeit ignoring King’s far more tragic end which punctuated the hopelessness of a future that looks more possible with every passing day, director Edgar Wright‘s version of The Running Man casts Glen Powell as down-on-his-luck blacklisted worker Ben Richards. In desperate need of medication for his sick daughter, Richards signs up to partake in the world’s most popular game show.
