Star Wars: Halcyon Legacy #1

The times are different, but the setting remains the same. Star Wars: Halcyon Legacy #1 introduces us to the luxury cruise ship Halcyon which has a habit of inviting trouble over the years.

In the present, pirates under the command of Crimson Jack arrive looking for a Resistance spy aboard the ship to sell to the First Order. In one flashback we are teased with a battle between Anakin Skywalker and Asajj Ventress. And, in the flashback that takes up the bulk of the issue, we get Jedi Knight Nib Assek and her Padawan Burryaga Agaburry fighting to save the ship from the Nihil.

Earning the cover, the comic is really of interest for the inclusion of a Wookiee Jedi who gets to show off some piloting skills keeping the Nihil at bay until help can arrive.

Nine days into her sobriety, Sam’s (Sofia Black-D’Elia) struggles continue with a run-in with her ex, bills for the damage she caused to the party bus, and a fight with her mother (Ally Sheedy). Some unexpected calm and context is found with a discussion with her mother’s new boyfriend Bob (Ian Gomez) who turns out to be more than the tool Sam was expecting and is actually making her mother happy. Gomez turns out to be a nice addition to the cast as Bob changes Sam’s view of her mother, that and some time with James (Garrick Bernard) help get Sam through another tough day while finally starting to live life one day at a time.

Detective Comics #1051

Part of the ongoing “Shadow of the Bat” arc, the Bat-Family (sans Batman) is trying to get a new drug off the streets of Gotham, the supplier of which is Arkham Tower’s Dr. Tobias Wear. He has been selling both real and fake shipments of drugs to criminals all over town who are none to happy. He’s also got Mayor Nakano on his back in terms of the city signing off on his form of treatment. Which is why he’s brought in Psycho Pirate to help control the situation. Turns out putting all your hopes on a emotionally-unstable psychotic in a jester’s costume isn’t necessarily the best plan.

Even several issues into the arc, you can still make out the basics of the plot here (although I’m not sure why so many Bat characters are needed undercover within Arkham Tower). The Psycho Pirate loosing control means all hell breaks loose in Arkham Tower at one point, but by the end the situation is as under control as things get in Gotham City.

The Power of the Dog

  • Title: The Power of the Dog

Sometimes a movie just doesn’t work for you. I didn’t hate director Jane Champion‘s The Power of the Dog but I’ll admit to being underwhelmed by the critical darling so many are quick to praise. Yes, it has a strong performance by Benedict Cumberbatch and some lovely scenery but it’s also saddled with a predictable plot and a host of single-note characters whom I never became invested in.  In fact, on my first viewing, the film literally put me to sleep.

Our leads are Benedict Cumberbatch as rough-and-tumble rancher Phil Burbank (the mean one), Jesse Plemons as his more genteel brother George (the bland one), Kirsten Dunst as inn owner and George’s new wife Rose (the female one), and Kodi Smit-McPhee as Rose’s nearly full-grown son Peter (the creepy one). The plot mainly involves Phil acting horribly to everyone and the eventual fallout of that behavior. The payoff of which, for me, wasn’t worth the time spent to get there.

The two-part “Spies” story brings back Tennant‘s (Vanessa Lachey) mentor from the CIA Maggie Shaw (Julie White) when a colleague of hers is kidnapped. Thanks to the help of an intelligence officer (Beulah Koale) from New Zealand, NCIS knows to be on the lookout of a legendary Far East spy, who eventually kidnaps Maggie as well. However, holes in the story after Maggie’s rescue make Tennant begin to suspect her closest friend may not be exactly who she appears to be.
