Supergirl - Back From the Future (Part Two) television review

“Back From the Future (Part One)” was a fun episode, but there’s really no reason why it needed to be stretched into two episodes. “Part One” brought back Jeremy Jordan to deal with an alternate Earth doppelganger. In “Part Two” the vanquised Toyman is found in digital form uploaded to the DEO’s intranet taking control of various weapons and computers as it tries to break out into the world. The episode offers Winn a nice hero moment both for the actor and character, even if that ground had already been covered in the previous episode.

Young Justice #13

Young Justice #13 comic reviewYoung Justice #13 spends most of its time in Skartaris where a traumatized Superboy is comforted by the Warlord. Those unfamiliar with the history of Mike Grell’s character, or the strange subterranean land filled with magic and monsters hidden at the center of the Earth, are given a primer here (including panels drawn by Grell himself). Featuring the work of three different artists, the comic has a less cohesive look than the previous issues of the volume but fans of the Warlord aren’t likely to mind as he steals the best moments here.

If you are looking to skip an issue and not miss much of the overall arc, this is probably and easy one to pass up as it does feel more of a sidebar into introducing Warlord than anything else.

“Welcome to New York.”

Katy Keene - Pilot television review

The sunnier and less-murdery Rivendale spin-off is also features modern interpretations of several classic Archie Comics characters starting with personal shopper and aspiring fashion designer Katy Keene (Lucy Hale). The show’s pilot episode features the arrival of Katy’s friend Josie McCoy (Ashleigh Murray) in New York which helps our titular character reexamine the state of her life working for a bitchy boss (Katherine LaNasa) instead of perusing her own dreams (and pursuing one’s dreams seems to be the show’s not-so-subtle primary theme). The other Archie character’s filling out the foursome are aspiring Broadway performer Jorge “Ginger” Lopez (Jonny Beauchamp) and the less developed “it girl” Pepper Smith (Julia Chan).

Red Sonja: Age of Chaos #1

Red Sonja: Age of Chaos #1 reviewRed Sonja: Age of Chaos #1 begins the time-travelling crossover between Red Sonja and various characters Dynamite Entertainment acquired from the now defunct Choas! Comics. In her own time, Sonja takes steps to prevent Kulan Gath from resurrecting again. In another time and place, Mistress Hel inspires several different characters to go in search of the wizard’s recently-discovered amulet which she promises will deliver them powers beyond their comprehension.

Although we don’t get to see Sonja mix it up with any of the other characters on display, it isn’t long before Hel’s prompting has the various Chaos! characters at each others throats in procuring the artifact, the effects of which may reach back to Sonja as well.

Guardians of the Galaxy #1

Guardians of the Galaxy #1 comic reviewIf you are thinking, didn’t Marvel just reboot this series less than a year ago? You are not mistaken. Marvel Comics relaunches the title once more with Peter Quill and Rocket Raccoon being pulled into the fray by Richard Rider who is seeking any heroes he can find to help stop the sudden appearance of of the Olympian Gods who are making a deadly swath across the galaxy.

While I’m not wild with the art from Juan Cabal, especially the look of Star-Lord (what’s up with the slicked-back hair and skinny jumpsuit?), I will admit I do kinda dig Rocket in a suit. The choice of Peter to answer the call against Gamora‘s wishes, and without her help, also means the full roster isn’t going to be on display (at least not at the beginning of the adventure).
