Darth Vader #1

Darth Vader #1 comic reviewSet earlier than Marvel’s previous Darth Vader series, the new comic begins shortly following the events of Revenge of the Sith with a newly resurrected Darth Vader sent out to prove his work to the Emperor and earn himself a new lightsaber. The logic of his mission seems a bit off, even for a Sith proving himself to his master, and I don’t know how I feel about the comic’s goofy explanation for where red Kyber Crystals come from.

While the setting allows for far more storylines than the previous comic (set between Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back) it also means we’re unlikely to see much in way of appearances of core Star Wars characters. The issue also includes a more humorous back-up story set far later in Vader’s timeline (mainly to justify a higher pricepoint for the comic).

Rick and Morty (Free Comic Book Day 2017)

Rick and Morty (Free Comic Book Day 2017) comic review2017’s Rick and Morty Free Comic Book Day issue reprints the opening issue of Oni Press’ ongoing Rick and Morty comic. In Part One of the Wubba Lubba Dub Dub of Wall Street, Rick overreacts to Jerry‘s suggestion that Morty should get a part-time job. After signing up Morty in the stock market, Rick uses a device to tell the future to make business blissfully good for the pair. Of course, there are a couple of problems.

First, Jerry doesn’t react well the billions the two pull in. Second, a time-cop known as Professor Tock (a fun take on a couple classic Doctors from Doctor Who) takes interest in the pair, knowing that Rick has already repeatedly violated the laws of time. And third, the truth about how Rick’s device actually works leaves Morty horrified.

Angel Season Eleven #5

Angel Season Eleven #5 comic reviewSent by Illyria through time into the vampire’s past, Angel and Fred find themselves on a ship bound for the new world where its crew is being picked off by Angelus and Darla. As with the first opening arc, this isn’t a walk down memory lane where Fred and Angel are observers to events, instead the pair are active in the timestream and able to make changes to the past.

While Angel is able to avoid being seeing by either Darla or his less soul-filled self, Fred isn’t so lucky. Seeking out the rumored magical item on the ship, Fred is able to find it but both vampires also find her. So how does Angel save his friend without directly confronting himself and possibly making large changes to the timeline (as you’d think Darla and Angelus would remembering running into an Angel with a soul)?

Wonder Woman

  • Title: Wonder Woman (2009)
  • IMDb: link

Wonder Woman DVD reviewReleased on home video eight years prior to the character getting her own theatrical live-action film, the animated feature 2009’s Wonder Woman offers an origin story for Diana (Keri Russell) loosely based on the 80s comic reboot by George Perez following the events of Crisis on Infinite Earths. While the film may have not been the critical or monetary success DC hoped for, it’s held up fairly well.

As with the new theatrical film, Wonder Woman gives us the basics of Diana’s origins, the arrival of Steve Rogers (Nathan Fillion) on the island of Themyscira, Diana winning the right to be called Wonder Woman, and the return of Ares (Alfred Molina) who plans to wreak havoc on Earth.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

  • Title: Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales movie reviewHow does a movie based off an amusement park ride end up with four sequels? Taking a page out of the book of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the latest entry into the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise goes back to the beginning to try and recapture the magic of its best film. Although it delivers not much more than a pale imitation of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, borrowing heavily from every major plot point, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is easily the least shitty sequel in a franchise that knows something about shitty sequels.

See if any of this sounds familiar: A man (Brenton Thwaites) with a pirate father and a woman (Kaya Scodelario) too independent for her time befriend the crazy pirate Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) while being pursued by a ship of undead cursed souls seeking a treasure that can save them and led by a captain (Javier Bardem) who hates Jack.

While all a bit too familiar, the choice to allow Jack to be more part of an ensemble rather than the central character certainly helps the film. Although even with less screentime the character grows tiresome at times.
