Green Lantern #48

Green Lantern #48Following the amusement park bombing that left his nephew in a coma, Hal Jordan heads to Gotham in search of answers about Sonar, the leader of a terrorist group claiming responsibility for the attack and threatening others if the United Nations refuses to give into his demands. The appearance of Batman Stand-in #7, or whatever this guy’s name is, attempts to play on the complicated relationship between Batman and Green Lantern but doesn’t have anywhere to go. Considering as a member of the Justice League there would be any number of other ways for Jordan to get the intelligence other than just showing up in the middle of Gotham (he doesn’t even go to the Batcave?) the entire sequence doesn’t make much sense.

The Big Bang Theory - The Sales Call Sublimation

The latest episode of The Big Bang Theory offers three separate stories, two of which play on long-running storylines. In the main story Leonard (Johnny Galecki) agrees to make an appointment with a psychiatrist (Jane Kaczmarek) to grease the wheels for Penny (Kaley Cuoco) to sell the doctor some prescription drugs. Initially doing so only as a favor to his girlfriend, Leonard finds the experience freeing as he’s able to uncork some bottled anger towards his mother’s bizarre view of child rearing. Penny also ends up on the doctor’s couch before the end of the episode.

Agent X - Fidelity

Agent X ends its First Season with Volker’s (Andrew Howard) plans revealed. The finale takes John (Jeff Hephner) and Olga (Olga Fonda) to Paris, masquerading as the pair of hitmen Volker sent to finish John off. Their orders lead them to the theater where a ridiculous number of world leaders are gathered together with a pitiful amount of security (so bad no one notices when Volker’s men take off the theater and the guards outside loose all communication to their own men).

Batgirl #46

Batgirl #46Despite the issue’s cover Batgirl #46 doesn’t quite give us the Batgirl and Spoiler team-up we were hoping for. In fact Stephanie Brown doesn’t even appear until halfway through the issue when Babs sets out to save the Spoiler who has gotten in over her head with the local gangs. Still, for at least a few panels we get to see the woman who should be Batgirl fight along side of the woman who is Batgirl.

Meeting during Spoiler’s fight with the gangs, the issue can’t quite resolve a major problem with the New 52 reboot where the two are far too similar in age for Babs to be taking the older sister approach which she did prior to the start of the New 52. Given the comic’s second soft reboot, which attempted to de-age the character a bit with the introduction of a new costume and creative team, balancing her actual age and experience to that of Spoiler is problematic (which is probably why the two say less than 100 words to each other).

Hot Girls Wanted

  • Title: Hot Girls Wanted

Hot Girls WantedDirected by Jill Bauer and Ronna Gradus, Hot Girls Wanted takes a look at the growing online amateur porn industry by taking us into the house of a small group of Internet porn newbies (few of whom will still be working in the industry by the end of the documentary). The directors succeed in getting a firsthand experience of the industry which tosses out young women at a rate, even once introduced into the industry, our starlets don’t comprehend.

Meant to be a shocking tell-all, Hot Girls Wanted is only partially successful (mainly because of how willing the young women all are to agree to and rationalize away any dehumanizing activity as long as it is 1. on camera and 2. pays the bills). The complicity to their actions undercuts the documentary’s message just as strongly as the documentarians taking further advantage of each of the women profiled for the purpose of their movie.

However, money is only half of the equation. A better film would dive deeper into the yearning for celebrity each girl is willing to go down an increasingly dark and fetishized path to achieve.
