Secret Six #7Secret Six #7 is a bit of a Who’s Who of the mystical and magical side of the DCU as we’re introduced to a meeting of several of the most powerful members of this group including the Phantom Stranger, Deadman, Zatanna, Klarion, and others gathered together to discuss a mutual problem: Black Alice. The young woman’s ability to tap into and temporarily steal their powers has not gone unnoticed, but the real trouble with how Alice operates is that it leaves each member of the collective weakened and in turn is causing a weakening in the mystical defenses that are keeping out a looming threat too powerful to fight. Their solution, however, won’t sit well with the other members of the Secret Six.

Supergirl - Stronger Together

The second episode of Supergirl continues to focus on Kara Zor-El‘s (Melissa Benoist) adventures as a struggling new hero. Although her heart is in the right place, Supergirl’s attempts to help cause an equal amount of damage and bad press. Taking the advice of Cat Grant (Calista Flockhart) the fledging hero goes back to the drawing board and by enlisting the help of Superman’s black friend James “Don’t Call Me Jimmy” Olsen (Mehcad Brooks) and Winn Schott (Jeremy Jordan) she begins a campaign to start smaller and defuse more easily-handled situations while learning on the job and slowly changing public perception.

Burnt

BurntIt didn’t make me hungry. That’s an interesting response to have towards a film centered around food. Our story stars Bradley Cooper as talented chef, recovering addict, and all around asshole Adam Jones who basically blackmails the old friend (Daniel Brühl) he screwed over in his last job into hiring him as the chef for a mediocre London restaurant. Jones’ motives are two-fold. First, he honestly does want to make amends to those he’s wronged in the past. At least as important to him, however, is the chance to reclaim glory in the hopes of achieving the prestigious three Michelin star rating as one of the best restaurants (and chefs) in Europe.

I joke that the food on display didn’t wet my appetite but Burnt deals with a different side of the retaurant business by focusing as much on its burdens, costs, and obsessive personalities struggling to work behind the scenes as it does about creating the food. Even when the film puts the food first the perspective is always more about the presentation of the meal than the meal itself. Although the film constantly tells us that Jones is culinary genius it rarely shows us actual examples of this on-screen.

Supergirl - Pilot

Playing on the classic version of the character while giving her super-hero alter-ego a thankless job in a modern media company, CBS’ Supergirl premieres with a solid “Pilot” episode that, while rough around the edges, manages to entertain and show room for improvement. Melissa Benoist seemed like an odd casting choice for Kara Zor-El, Superman’s older (but younger) cousin from Kyrpton sent to Earth to protect him as a baby only to get lost in space and show up years later, but has spirit and spunk that serves her well here. The episode has some nice winks to comic and TV history for both Superman and Supergirl including giving Dean Cain and Helen Slater cameos as the human couple who raised Kara on Earth.

Continuing the season’s theme of having Castle (Nathan Fillion) work outside the department and horn in on Beckett‘s (Stana Katic) cases in an attempt to win back the affections of his wife (which he hasn’t even lost), “The Nose” centers around a priceless stolen painting and a witness (Stephnie Weir) who can identify the killer not by sight but by smell. Caring just as much about how the woman’s extra-sensory perceptions can tell him about Beckett’s mood, Castle enlists the help of the reluctant witness to help track down the killer and find the painting.
