Superman #34

Superman #34Superman‘s joy over reuniting Ulysses with his parents is short lived when the two orphans find themselves battling the man behind the recent attacks on Metropolis. First The Machinist manages to take control over Ulysses pitting him against his new best bud, but the tragedy for the Man of Steel comes later when his new friend takes deadly action to stop the madman which only leaves an innocent dead. Well, I guess it could have been worse. I mean Ulysses could have completely ignored every other conceivable option and just snapped the guy’s neck. Right?

Next month’s issue will tell readers quite a bit of what Geoff Johns has planned for Ulysses and how Superman reacts to his new friend’s use of deadly force. (Zack Snyder suggests a high five.) Too by-the-numbers for my taste, “Men of Tomorrow” seems to have taken its expected dark turn leaving the continued bromance between the new friends in serious doubt. For fans.

Guardians of the Galaxy #18

Guardians of the Galaxy #18The conclusion of the Cancerverse storyline which ended the previous run of Guardians of the Galaxy on a cliffhanger with the fate of Star-Lord, Thanos, and Nova in doubt is addressed for the first time in three-and-a-half years in Guardians of the Galaxy #18 as Gamora confronts Peter Quill about what really happened.

I’m assuming the Original Sin tie-in helps explain the lengths Gamora goes to in order to elicit the information out of Star-Lord in this issue (but since I’m not reading the event I can’t be sure). Whatever the case, the story jumps from narrated flashbacks to a discussion between the two Guardians (one of them tied to a chair).

Incomplete, the comic ends on yet another cliffhanger (this one involving the Cosmic Cube), the story works although by now most readers have long moved on. I was slightly disappointed that the comic doesn’t address the original Guardians who were a part of Cancerverse arc as I’ll always root for appearances of Starhawk and his teammates. For fans.

Doctor Who - Into the Dalek

Have you ever thought to yourself, “Gee, I really want Doctor Who to be more like Innerspace!”? Yeah… me neither. Following a somewhat lackluster premiere, Peter Capaldi‘s run as the Twelfth Doctor begins in earnest here as The Doctor and Clara (Jenna-Louise Coleman) find themselves shrunk down by soldiers and surgically implanted inside a damaged Dalek. Nicknaming him Rusty, The Doctor escorts the soldiers (who might as well be wearing red shirts) and Clara through the creature’s innards in an attempt to do something he knows is impossible: create a good Dalek.

Legends - Lord of War

In order to track down the missing Russian scientist (David Meunier) and his family before the man is forced to complete making the VX gas, Martin Odum (Sean Bean) assumes the role of arms dealer Dante Auerbach. Calling on an old business associate (Dominic Raines), Dante is given an introduction to the seller (Necar Zadegan) of the Chechnyans whom he must convincingly woo to get one step closer to stopping the gas from hitting the black market. In doing so he will eventually be led to the man (Alon Aboutboul) behind the scientist’s kidnapping and the creation of the gas whom is prepared to sell Dante the goods provided the man proves himself first.
