The investigation into the murder of a real estate agent found behind the drywall of a recently-sold home takes a backseat to a pair of storylines involve characters’ personal lives. After picking up his mother (Melanie Griffith) from the airport, Danny (Scott Caan) struggles to deal with the bombshell that she’s divorcing his father and moving on with her life. Railing against the situation for most of the episode, Danny finally comes to terms with the news and offers his mother the support she needs.

Beware The Batman - Shadows of GothamCollecting the 13 episode run of Beware the Batman (including the final two episodes which which never aired on Cartoon Network), the CGI-version of the Dark Knight Detective’s early adventures featuring a more formidable Alfred (JB Blanc) and Katana (Sumalee Montano) as Batman‘s (Anthony Ruivivar) sidekick has been on indefinite hiatus since mid-October and its return (despite entitling the home video set “Part 1”) seems to becoming less and less likely.

Despite some shaky beginnings, including too many appearances by D-list villains such as Professor Pyg (Brian George) and Mr. Toad (Udo Kier), Humpty Dumpty, Magpie (Grey DeLisle), and an unnecessary retelling of Metamorpho (Adam Baldwin) origin story, the show was just beginning to find its feet as Katana was growing into her role as Batman’s partner and the show was focusing more and more on the League of Assassins as it winds up its initial 13 episode run ending with a cliffhanger, arguably the show’s best episode, the network chose never to air.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: New Animated Adventures #8The Rat King is one of my least favorite Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles villains but the latest issue of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: New Animated Adventures does what it can with the villain and also returns Monkey Brains whose attempts to control the rodent-controlling madman who stuck his mind in the body of chimp have unintended side effects when he accidentally gives the Rat King even greater control of New York’s rat population allowing him to gather them all together to form a giant monster swarm of destruction.

If that sounds kinda gross it’s because it is, but Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: New Animated Adventures #8 also begins to further develop April O’Neil‘s unique sensibilities which prove instrumental in helping defeat the villain.

Those who are more fond of the Rat King than I am are likely to enjoy the issue more than I did, but even so there’s enough here in terms of character interaction and developing ongoing plots which I felt helped the comic work despite focusing on a villain I don’t much care for. For fans.
