Doctor Who - The Rings of Akhaten

After popping around the history of his latest companion to try and figure out the mystery of her existence, The Doctor (Matt Smith) returns to the present to make another offer to travel through space and time, which this time is accepted. For Clara‘s (Jenna-Louise Coleman) first adventure aboard the TARDIS The Doctor takes her to the planet Akhaten whose inhabitants believe all life in the universe began on their seven worlds. After being separated by The Doctor in the alien market, Clara befriends a scared young girl named Merry (Emilia Jones), the Queen of Years, who is hiding from her responsibility of singing a special song as part of the the Festival of Offerings.

Detective Comics #19

Detective Comics #19At $8 Detective Comics #19 is overpriced for anyone who isn’t a huge fan of Man-Bat. All but one of the stories (involving Bane created a Venom-powered army to continue his vendetta against the Court of Owls) contained in this issue deal with Batman responding new a Man-Bat outbreak (which includes a Man-Bat version of Zsaz) started by Emperor Penguin to steal Gotham blind during the chaos or its consequences.

In an inexplicable chronological snafu set by the launch of the New 52 (and Grant Morrison‘s insistence to keep using Man-Bats as Talia‘s soldiers), we get out first introduction to Kurt Langstrom (the scientist who invented the Man-Bat serum) and, in the New 52 version is far, far, far from being the first to transform into a half-man/half-bat hybrid.

Other stories involve Emperor Penguin’s soldiers bilking Gotham out of millions, the Penguin planning his escape from prison and revenge against his former assistant, Mrs. Langstrom’s plans to save her husband, and a disagreement between cops, one of whom was infected by the Man-Bat virus, over Batman’s proper role in the city. Following the bombing at Synequanon, whose 84 victims included Amos’ (Greg Bryk) wife and daughter, President Carrington (Stephen McHattie) extends the powers of the Patriot Act to track down The Veil. Meanwhile mysterious double of XIII (Stuart Townsend), who is actually responsible for the bombing, returns to The Veil to accept responsibility and convince Vargas (Bruce Ramsay) and the other members of the activist organization to continue down the road he has started. Meanwhile the real XIII remains trapped in the brainwashing facility as his double continues to try to convince XIII that he is responsible for the terrorist attack, which is exactly what Jones (Aisha Tyler) believes when Carrington shows her security footage of the attack.

Bones - The Maiden in the Mushrooms

The Jeffersonian team is called in to investigate the murder of a television producer (Danielle Harris) found in the basement of an abandoned building with mushrooms growing out of her remains. The case leads Bones (Emily Deschanel) and Booth (David Boreanaz) to the TV judge (Gina Hecht) of small claims court where the victim worked. Suspects include the victim’s replacement (Allison Scagliotti), the victim’s ex-boyfriend (Jason Gerhardt), her stalker (David Petruzzi), the judge whose on-air drinking problem may have come between her and the victim, and an angry contestant (Rose Colasanti) who blamed the victim for loosing her case on national television.
