Action Comics #1067

Action Comics #1067 offers a tale from Superman‘s past when an investigation into a youth center getting closed down is interrupted by aliens known as the Gorathians. Superman agrees to fight the invaders’ champion, who he successfully defeats, but he’ll have to deal with the fallout next issue. The story works well enough (although I was more interested in the corruption angle before the aliens showed up), but I wasn’t wild on the art of Eddy Barrows for anyone other than Superman which seems to be going for a Neal Adams 70s vibe.

Space Ghost #3

Space Ghost #3

With the origin story of how Jan and Jace started working with Space Ghost complete, the series moves on to the three fighting evil together. We see some early frustration from Space Ghost to how cavalier the youngsters but they’ll step up before the issue is done. The main story involves Space Ghost making a deal with the unscrupulous Widow who plans out a heist of Robo Corp which would allow Space Ghost, Jan, and Jace all to get some some intelligence on, and some payback for, the company that destroyed all of their lives.

Wizards of Waverly Place - Crazy 10 Minute Sale

Wayback Wednesday takes us back to a family of wizards living in Waverly Place. Premiering in Fall of 2007, the first episode of Wizards of Waverly Place introduced us to teenage wizard Alex Russo (Selena Gomez) and her brothers Justin (David Henrie) and Max (Jake T. Austin) who are trained by their father (David DeLuise) to use magic while also attempting to be normal and fit in at school. Not taking any time for introductions or setting up the world, “Crazy 10 Minute Sale” jumps in with an average day for the Russos where Alex, in order to attend the biggest sale of the year, uses a duplication spell learned in this episode to create a doppelganger to attend magic training in her place. Of course, things go wrong.

Invitation to a Murder

Set in 1934, a group of strangers are brought together by a reclusive billionaire to his private island estate. The guests include florist, and mystery novel aficionado, Miranda Green (a frumpy Mischa Barton), an American journalist (Chris Browning), a lawyer (Seamus Dever), and three others (Bianca A. Santos, Giles Matthey, and Grace Lynn Kung). The last character of the film is the estate itself, well-shot but underutilized until the film’s final act.

The Batman & Scooby-Doo Mysteries #7

The Batman & Scooby-Doo Mysteries #7

Feeling much more a Batman story than a Scooby-Doo story, The Batman & Scooby-Doo Mysteries #7 features Batman and Mystery, Inc. working together to stop the Scarecrow who is performing a series of heists around Gotham City using his fear gas. We’re shown the villain at the off-set and, although there is some discovery to be made about uncovering Scarecrow’s master to get his gas into every home, it’s really Batman who is responsible for the deductions. You could take the Scooby-Doo characters completely out of the story and that wouldn’t change it all that much.
