The Irrational - Dead Woman Walking

The concept of a poisoned client hiring a detective to solve their murder comes up more often than you would expect in detective fiction. Elementary played with versions of the idea more than once including “Possibility Two.” In “Dead Man Walking,” Alec Mercer (Jesse L. Martin) is hired by a well-known investigative journalist (Amy Aquino) to discover who has poisoned her with a radioactive biproduct for which there is no known cure. The case is hampered by a lack of suspects making it all too easy to guess her partner (Fred Ewanuick) is our killer, although it takes our characters longer to come to that conclusion. The story hits home for Alec’s assistant Phoebe (Molly Kunz) allowing the show to fill in a bit of her backstory as well. A fine, if not too memorable, episode (although the grizzly bear experiment is a nice use of the show’s concept).

Wilderness – The Other Woman

Only two episodes into the series, the revenge subplot gets further derailed when Cara (Ashley Benson) and her boyfriend show up on the same nature trail as Liv (Jenna Coleman) and Will (Oliver Jackson-Cohen). The awkward foursome head off on a trail together and band together a bit more after Will takes a tumble in the woods and his distraction leads to their car being stolen putting all four under the same hotel roof. We also get flashbacks to quite a bit of Liv stalking Cara in the weeks prior to the trip. Laying the melancholy on thick, after offering us a reason to root for murder at the end of the first episode, the second simply makes us sad for everyone involved.

Captain America #1

Captain America #1

Captain America #1 is a bit all over the place. I’d call in a day in the life of a super-hero, except the comic covers multiple days decades apart. The current story focuses on Steve Rogers figuring out ways to make a difference when not dressed in a spangly outfit by buying the crumbling building of his youth and doing upgrades to prevent people in the neighborhood from getting evicted. It’s a nice idea, but I’m not sure where the story goes from here.

Almost Paradise - Old Times

Setting up events for the season finale, “Old Times” features Alex (Christian Kane) looking into a murder at the Villegas Casino after both Ann (Max Collins) and the local authorities asked him to stay away from this case. Alex traces the unusual style of the murder back to that of a longtime assassin who he links to an elderly hotel guest (Kim Knuckey) and his wife (Carolyn Bock). What he doesn’t realize is the elderly couple are stringing him along and that he, not Ann, is their target. Alex’s interactions with the couple, while honestly liking the pair but attempting to pump them for information, are the highlights of the episode.

Ahsoka - Dreams and Madness

The penultimate episode of Ahsoka confirms the show’s purpose as a prequel and filler to the “real story” Disney will no doubt get around to eventually. It’s also important to note that, as in the case of many episodes of the series, there are absolutely no consequences for any characters in this episode. What “Part Seven” does offer is some Sabine (Natasha Liu Bordizzo) and Ezra Bridger (Eman Esfandi), who apparently has gotten less adept with the Force since we saw him last, time together with her being more than a bit coy about how she managed to reach him, Ahsoka (Rosario Dawson) making to the other galaxy and eventually to the planet for a reunion, and Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen) using the resources as his disposal to stall the Jedi providing more time for his escape.
