The latest from writer/director Christopher Nolan is complicated, reality bending, multi-layered look inside the world of unconscious imagination. In the near future the ability to enter into an individual’s dreams and extract information has become a profitable, but highly illegal, enterprise. Leonardo DiCaprio stars as Dom Cobb the leader of a group of experts who are the best at this type of information extraction.

As Cobb’s past catches up with him, both in the real world and that of his dreams, he’s offered a single chance to reclaim the life which was taken from him if he can perform the impossible: Inception. The idea is not to steal information from the latest subject, the heir to a business empire (Cillian Murphy), but instead implant an idea in his mind which will grow naturally and change one choice in the real world which could mean billions for Cobb’s client.

Why Dr. Dinosaur Hates Atomic Robo

atomic-robo-v4-3-coverVolume 4 of Atomic Robo has been less than consistent so far. Issue #1 gave us a kick-ass tale of invading vampires from the fourth dimension, but Issue #2 was little more than a good cure of insomnia.

In fact, the second issue of Volume 4 was so bad I almost didn’t bother to even pick this one up. And, oh my, am I glad I did! Issue #3 picks up the pieces and gives us another humorous and energetic tale of the hatred between Atomic Robo and Dr. Dinosaur (the conclusion to the Free Comic Book tale some might remember from 2009).

The villain’s plan (involving crystals, Robo’s head in a box, and Betamax) is revealed along with how Doctor Dinosaur got his name. Insanely funny, this one’s definitely worth a look.

Chill of the Night

If you’ve read your share of Batman comics you know the name Joe Chill, the man who forever changed the life of young Bruce Wayne one dark night in Crime Alley. With two bullets a simple thug changed the life of one small boy, and created Batman.

For the more lighthearted Batman: The Brave and the Bold the story of Batman confronting Chill might seem and odd pairing, but it works. In “Chill of the Night” the Spectre and the Phantom Stranger place a wager (who knew they both had a gambling problem?) on how the Dark Knight will respond to coming face-to-face with the murderer of his parents. The result gives us a fresh take on the classic “The Origin of Batman” Silver Age tale.

Fantastic Mr. Fox, Simply Fantastic

I’m far from director Wes Anderson’s biggest fan. Although I enjoyed The Royal Tenenbaums (and to a lesser extent The Darjeeling Limited), in my opinion, most of his work seems to value style over, and sometimes at the cost of, substance.

Anderson’s latest Fantastic Mr. Fox is a stop-motion animated adaptation of Roald Dahl’s book about a fox fighting his own nature to steal from the wealthy farmers Boggis (Robin Hurlstone), Bunce (Hugo Guinness) and Bean (Michael Gambon), and provide his family with what he feels they deserve.

And, I must admit, it’s really, really good. In many ways the film is a perfect fit for Anderson and merge of its offbeat humor with his own. The stop-animation allows the director to play to his strenghts and design a a complete world. And as a book the story is naturally divided into the kinds of chapters Anderson enjoys breaking his film into (here he even provides titles for each).
