Stargirl - Shining Knight television review

Following the death of Henry (Jake Austin Walker), Courtney (Brec Bassinger) receives another gut punch with the arrival of her biological father, a drifter named Sam Curtis (Geoff Stults) who is very much not Starman. Shattering her illusion she was a legacy fulfilling a destiny of picking up her father’s staff in the war against the ISA, the arrival of Sam, neither hero nor villain but simply a selfish absentee father, is a blow as strong as any that left her in the hospital earlier in the season.

Once and Future #9

Once and Future #9Picking up from the end of last issue, Once and Future #9 opens with Duncan and his Gran taking on Beowulf. The pair survive (which is more than can be said for Duncan’s car) thanks to some quick thinking and a holy landmine. Once and Future #9 continues the theme of strong action and sly humor as despite dispatching Beowulf things are not going to get any easier for our young hero.

The issue offers some time with Merlin who explains the distraction of Beowulf, despite knowing that Brigette and Duncan were likely to survive that attack. There’s a clever twist as Merlin reveals that when you bring heroes back from legend they don’t come alone.

Doom Patrol - Puppet Patrol television review

Ah, the episode with the Nazi puppets! Seriously, you can keep reading, but it that sentence wasn’t enough to get you to watch then I honestly don’t know what to tell you. The search for the missing Chief (Timothy Dalton), who disappeared after a donkey farted and a giant sinkhole swallowed up an entire town, leads the Doom Patrol and Cyborg (Joivan Wade) on a road trip to Paraguay where Cliff (Brendan Fraser), Jane (Diane Guerrero), and Larry (Matt Bomer) find the former Nazi scientist who provided Morden (Alan Tudyk) with his powers. Thanks to a little puppet show detailing the history of Heinrich Von Fuchs, we get some insight into the animosity between Chief and Morden and the villain’s recent kidnapping of the Doom Patrol’s mentor.

Black Cat #11

Black Cat #11 comic reviewThe comic’s opening arc continues as Black Cat has managed to steal all the pieces for the Randall Gate. Now all that’s missing for Black Fox‘s planned heist of the Thieves Guild is the key to turning the thing on. In a comic that has featured Felicia breaking in to the who’s who of the Marvel Universe, could there be anywhere else to retrieve it but Stark Unlimited?

Despite my having serious doubts about Stark security not being able to recognize Felicia Hardy in a wig, I’ll admit the comic has fun with Felicia playing on Tony Stark’s weakness for both redheads and women who enjoy verbally sparring with him. With the help of a little tech allowing her to temporarily pass for Stark where the building’s automated systems are concerned and a patsy to drag Iron Man’s attention elsewhere, Felicia is able to work her way to the Stark Nanoforge and forge the Dimensional Resonator.

SHAZAM! #12

SHAZAM! #12 comicsSHAZAM! #12 is a throwback to the kind of one-off stories that used to be commonplace before writers and artists started almost exclusively creating arcs for graphic novel collections. After beating Crocodile Man and getting some shit from Freddy about the quality of his rogues gallery, our hero heads to Gotham for a team-up with Batman (who he’s thrilled to learn also has a crocodile-themed villain).

Featuring Billy getting in over his head against the Scarecrow, facing his fears, and finding some common ground with the Dark Knight Detective (who knows a thing or two about teaching young heroes), SHAZAM! #12 is the kind of story I wish we were getting more of nowadays. Would I like to see more of the pair together? Sure, but the simple team-up works well within the pages of a single comic.
