Usagi Yojimbo: Ten Thousand Plums #4

The second story of the five-issue arc begins here with Miyamoto Usagi and Yukichi arriving at a new town for some much-needed rest. With some cash following their recent adventure with Gen, the pair splurge taking advantage of an inn known for its hot tubs. While there, Usagi meets a Christian on a pilgrimage, like many others, to a local Buddhist shrine which legend say has the power to heal the sick. Usgai relates the odd occurrence to his traveling companion who it seems doesn’t know much about Christianity allowing Usagi to recount the little he does know to Yukichi.

Jon Benjamin) gets a bit lost at the casino buffet falling in love with the all-you-can-eat prime rib, and the kids, after finding a quarter, struggle with finding a way to get past a security guard in order to gamble, Linda gets the shock of her life.

The brainchild of writer/director Kerry Conran, 2004’s Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow was an ambitious and stylish production featuring a small cast against digital background in much the way Sin City would do one year later. Capturing the feel of 40s futurism (such as that found in the 1939 World’s Fair) and the look and tone of classic serials and cartoons such as Fleischer Studios’ Superman – “The Mechanical Monsters,” it’s an amazing piece of filmmaking that despite its box office disappointment has earned a following over the past two decades.

The return of the reboot’s first villain, Alexandra Bligh (Lucy Taylor), offers the opportunity for an all-girls episode with the team stretched across the globe. The fact that the team is never stretched this thin, with everyone working separately, is simply a conceit you’ll have to allow in order for events to play out. After kidnapping Sophie (Gina Bellman), Bligh pits nemeses Parker (Beth Riesgraf) and Astrid (Alexandra Park) against each other commanding one to steal a priceless treasure on display and the other to prevent the theft. The costume ball, in honor of the displays of Marie Antoinette, prevents the pair from running into each other for most of the episode until they finally do in the vault leading to the confrontation Bligh has been hoping for.

A double-homicide in a rural county leads to Will (Ramón Rodríguez) and Faith (Iantha Richardson) butting heads with the local Sheriff (Yul Vazquez) and the discovery that one of the victims was a member of a domestic terrorist cell who was attempting to prevent the group’s next attack. It’s also an episode for bombshells as the aftermath of Angie’s (Erika Christensen) drunken night leads to Seth (Scott Foley) learning about Angie’s tumble off the wagon and both discovering she’s pregnant. As for Will, he gets a shot in the gut as well when a blood test confirms the territorial Sheriff Caleb Broussard is his biological father.
