Our Throwback Thursday post takes us back into the Cold War spycraft of Danger Man. “The Girl in Pink Pajamas” offers a terrific set-up as John Drake (Patrick McGoohan) heads to the Balkans where an attempted assassination is being kept under wraps at a small hospital, under the guise of mysterious contagion, as doctors work to save the President (Robert Cawdron) of an Amercian-friendly Balkan state. At the same time a young American woman (Angela Browne) suffering from amnesia but muttering about the hospital is found in the countryside. Drake returns to the hospital with the woman, hoping to put the pieces together before another attempt is made on the President’s life.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Yojimbo television review

The first of three episodes to guest-star Miyamoto Usagi (Yuki Matsuzaki), and the only one written by rabbit ronin creator Stan Sakai, “Yojimbo” finds the Turtles transported to an anthropomorphic dimension and hypnotized by the evil Jei (Keone Young) to kill the wandering samurai and capture the young child who is under the ronin’s protection. How many ninja turtles does it take to defeat one rabbit ronin? More than four. In their confrontation, Usagi is able to knock some sense back into the turtles who agree to travel with Usagi to deliver young Kintaro (Evan Kishiyama) to the Temple of the Sky Buddha.

Avengers: Infinity War

Avengers: Infinity War movie review2012’s The Avengers brought together all the elements from the planned Phase One of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It was a payoff movie, and one that was executed brilliantly by Joss Whedon. It also gave us the first on-screen appearance of Thanos (now played by Josh Brolin) whose foreshadowed war on the universe would be put on hold for several years. Until now. Since The Avengers, too many of the Marvel movies have been forced into world building while telling their story. For the first time in years, there is no horizon which frees sreenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely and directors the Russo Brothers to simply tie the elements together as Whedon did six years ago and tell one hell of a story. And you know what? They do a damn good job.

With some notable exceptions (Natalie Portman, Jeremy Renner, Paul Rudd, and Marvel is still completely ignoring their television properties) everyone is on hand to deal with the threat of Thanos who finally gets around to collecting the Infinity Stones which will allow him to complete his life-long quest of killing off half the lives across the universe with the snap of his fingers.

Action Comics #1000 comic reviewThe oldest comic around sets an unprecedented milestone with its 1,000th issue. Action Comics #1000 features a collection of variant covers of Superman over the years to go with a collection of stories from various writers and artists.

The story likely to get the most publicity is the one to close-out the comic. In the only story that also features Supergirl, Jim Lee provides the art for Brian Michael Bendis’ first DC story that not only confirms Superman will no longer be going commando but also introduces a new villain who claims to have ties to the destruction of Krytpon. It’s an intriguing opening for Bendis, who has already won me over with the argument that Superman just isn’t Superman without those red shorts. Now if only we could convince Batman of the same.

Dan Jurgens offers a story of an uncomfortable Clark dealing with Superman Day while other heroes fight off an alien attack across the globe. Peter J. Tomasi and Patrick Gleason deliver a tale of Superman reliving various past eras thanks to an attack by Vandal Savage that showcases a few different looks from the hero’s past.

Magnum, P.I. - Memories are Forever television review

Today’s Throwback Tuesday post takes us back to Hawaii. While taking pictures for a divorce case, Magnum (Tom Selleck) catches a glimpse of a familiar face through a telescopic lens of the wife he lost during the Vietnam War. Unable to get a clean shot of her face, Magnum has trouble convincing either T.C. (Roger E. Mosley) or Rick (Larry Manetti) that Michelle (Marta DuBois), who was reportedly killed in a bombing in Saigon, could still be alive and partying on a boat in the Honolulu harbor. However, a close-up of her necklace (featuring the same symbol as on our private dick’s ring) does finally spur Magnum’s friends into action. Hell, even Higgins (John Hillerman), despite being thoroughly confused by the entire situation, is on-hand to help.
