Astro City #50

Astro City #50 comic reviewI always love to see writer Kurt Busiek and artist Brent Anderson delve into the nuts-and-bolts of a world where super-heroes exist, and how such a world might effect every day folks. A sequel to the Eisner-nominated “The Nearness of You,” Astro City #50 introduces us to Michael Tenicek who runs a support group for those touched by super-villain violence.

In a world where the bizarre and inexplicable can take loved ones and leave scars, of course Astro City would need something like this to exist and allow people to gather and share their experiences, pain, and fear.

The Blacklist - Abraham Stern television review

When Reddington (James Spader) is robbed of his rare 1943 Lincoln penny by a fellow treasure seeker he sicks the FBI task force on Abraham Stern (Nathan Lane) who, like Red, wants to use the penny to find a cache of 1930s Federal Reserve notes which are worth a small fortune and that hardly anyone else believes even exists. To find the treasure the two thieves will be forced to work together… at least until they start betraying each other. Lane is a fun addition to the show’s guest-stars, and his capture leaves the door open should the show’s writers entice the star to return.

Beauty and the Creature from the Black Lagoon

  • Title: The Shape of Water

The Shape of Water movie reviewGuillermo del Toro puts his own spin on the Beauty and the Beast tale in The Shape of Water which stars Sally Hawkins as a mute janitor at the the Occam Aerospace Research Center who discovers just what the scientists and military men are studying. Doug Jones, who worked with del Toro before in the Hellboy films and Pan’s Labyrinth, is transformed by practical and CGI effects into a creature who is part Abe Sapien and part the Creature from the Black Lagoon. Never given a name, nor able to speak (just like the woman who falls for him), the design of “the asset” is terrific.

The story is pretty standard. Girl meets boy from the wrong side of the tracks, they fall in love, and all hell breaks loose. The talent both in front and behind the camera elevates the words on the printed page into a magical fairy tale which is joyful to watch. The setting of the 1960s, Elisa’s (Hawkins) inability to speak, Richard Jenkins as her confidant, and Michael Shannon as the brutal colonel in control of the experiment, all add interesting pieces to the puzzle making The Shape of Water more than the sum of its parts. Supporting performances from Octavia Spencer, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Lauren Lee Smith all bring something to add and help flesh out the world.
