State and Main DVD review

It’s about purity. We’ll double-down on Throwback Thursday this week to take a quick look at David Mamet‘s underrated 2000 comedy State and Main in which a movie set is forced to relocate to the sleepy town of Waterford, Vermont when their star’s (Alec Baldwin) love of underage girls gets them thrown out of New Hampshire. Immensely entertaining and highly quotable, this one never fails to make me laugh.

Go you Huskies. Featuring an amazing cast, Mamet gives us Philip Seymour Hoffman as the playwright turned screenwriter, William H. Macy as the film’s director, Baldwin and Sarah Jessica Parker as the film’s stars, and Rebecca Pidgeon, Clark Gregg, and Julia Stiles as townies. All turn out to be perfect fits for Mamet’s quick dialogue that takes equal swipes at Hollywood and small town life but still finds ways to celebrate each.

Everybody needs a hobby. The conflict in the film comes from the dysfunction of the set, the uproar the movie folks have on the town (in both positive and negative ways), and their star’s latest dalliance which puts the entire project in jeopardy.

Star Wars Rebels - Trial of the Darksaber TV review

Over the course of three seasons Star Wars Rebels hasn’t given us too many episodes that highlight the team’s weapon specialist. Sure, we’ve been given glimpses into her past by the appearance of her former bounty-hunter partner, and heard mentions of her clan, but for the most part Sabine‘s (Tiya Sircar) past has remained undeveloped. The recovery of the Darksaber begins to rectify this as Sabine is challenged to take control of the legendary weapon and use it to unify the remnants of Madalore once more.

Usagi Yojimbo #160

Usagi Yojimbo #160 comic reviewThe single-issue tale tackles the dangerous delicacy of Fugu when a friend of Miyamoto Usagi is accused of poisoning one of his most valued customers. After the shogun’s agent turns up dead from eating improperly prepared pufferfish, Usagi steps in to help Inspector Ishida in the investigation which quickly points to other suspects when the pair discover the original Fugu had been replaced before it ever made it to its victim.

As writer/artist Stan Sakai is known to do with the comic, Usagi Yojimbo #160 not only delivers a new adventure for Usagi but also teaches the reader about an aspect of Japanese culture. The truth behind the death turns out to be more complicated than either Usagi or Ishida suspect. The issue also includes an unexpected back-up story in Chibi style fans should enjoy.

Longmire - Pure Peckinpah TV review

Ghosts from the past come back to haunt Walt (Robert Taylor) and company in “Pure Peckinpah” just as the show cements a pair of new villains (Dylan Walsh and Dan Donohue) whose drug business will likely keep the County Sheriff’s office busy for the remainder of the season. The murder of the local drug dealer recently threatened by Hector makes Walt suspect the vigilante may be responsible. This forces Henry (Lou Diamond Phillips) and Mathias (Zahn McClarnon) to walk a tightrope not only to get Walt off Hector as a suspect in the murder but to also reconsider his suspicions that Mathias is the one taking justice into his own hands.
