For its Christmasy mid-season finale The Flash pulls out all the stops and delivers the best episode of the season so far. Along with Barry (Grant Gustin) and company discover Julian‘s (Tom Felton) secret, the episode enlightens the viewers on who Savitar is and why it seems he’s targeted Barry. The Librarians and the Reunion of Evil

What was supposed to be a simple artifact retrieval turns into anything but for Stone (Christian Kane) and Cassandra (Lindy Booth) who, after retrieving the crystal, are forced to take shelter from a storm in a lodge full of Norse Frost Giants whose hatred of humans is only slightly less potent than their desire to feed from the crystal’s power. Meanwhile, back in the Library, Ezekiel (John Kim) proves Eve‘s (Rebecca Romijn) trust in him correct, both by protecting the egg of the Lochness Monster and in providing valuable intelligence for their missing Librarians (all while appearing to be doing nothing but slacking off as usual).

Usagi Yojimbo #159

Usagi Yojimbo #159The single-issue story “The Hatamoto’s Daughter” begins with the death of a samurai by a band of ruffians deep in the forest. Hiding his daughter, and proof of illegal matters the gang’s leader wants returned, the man is cut down. Finding the young girl hours later, a wandering Miyamoto Usagi takes it upon himself to see her safely delivered to Inspector Ishida in the closest town.

Given the dangerous information the young girl has in her possession, however, the mercenaries will not let the ronin’s protection be a deterrent to get their hands on the girl. It’s a mistake they won’t live to regret.

Loving

  • Title: Loving
  • IMDb: link

LovingLove is color blind, except in the state of Virginia. Based on the true story of Richard (Joel Edgerton) and Mildred Loving (Ruth Negga), Loving follows the events which led to the Supreme Court case Loving v. Virginia after the Lovings were expelled from the state under threat of prison for violating the state’s Racial Integrity Act of 1924, which prohibited interracial cohabitation and marriage.

Leaving the legal maneuverings, motions, and trial to occur largely off-screen, instead writer/director Jeff Nichols focuses the film on Richard and Mildred. Despite a world that told them loving each other was wrong, the pair found each other and stood by each other in the years where hatred and bigotry did their best to destroy their love. The film’s title perfectly summarizes the pair’s relationship. Not out to change the world, simply understanding that their love couldn’t be wrong, their struggle is both emotional and inspirational. With so much of the film riding on their shoulders, Negga and Edgerton are terrific on-screen together in low-key but emotion-packed performances. It’s impossible not to root for them and it makes you sad for any world which would try to keep them apart.

Lucifer - Quid Pro Ho

I loved this episode. The trial of the man who murdered Chloe‘s (Lauren German) father begins, and when the star witness turns up dead Lucifer (Tom Ellis) takes the stand. Although hugely entertaining, his testimony does open a hole in the prosecution’s case. Things are complicated by 1) The fallout from Lucifer standing up Chloe on their date, 2) Lucifer’s Mum (Tricia Helfer) defending the man who killed Chloe’s father, and 3) Detective Douche (Kevin Alejandro) sleeping with Lucifer’s mother and unintentionally providing ammunition for the defense. In the end Chloe must choose to sacrifice Lucifer to get justice or stand-up for her partner and allow the man responsible for her father’s death to go free.
