Grendel vs. The Shadow #2

Grendel vs. The Shadow #2The three-issue mini-series resumes as Grendel continues to grab control of the city’s various crime families and bring them under his banner while ruthlessly killing any who stand in his way. Grendel vs. The Shadow #2 also gives us the first meeting between the pair which both Lamont Cranston and Hunter Rose will think long and hard about in the days to come as each has apparently met an adversary they may not be able to defeat.

Despite the $6 price-tag, Matt Wagner again delivers with a terrific double-sized prestige comic pitting the iconic hero against Wagner’s greatest creation. Following the battle, much of the comic is set aside for each man to contemplate his enemy. Hunter Rose also continues to make a professional splash in his new home, and charm a crime boss’ daughter as well. And Grendel gets the best of The Shadow not once but twice. First, despite his defeat, he survives and escapes their initial encounter (something few villains can brag about accomplishing). And second, he immediately recognizes Cranston as the man behind the scarf setting up another battle in the final issue. Must-read.

Once Upon a Time - Rocky Road

The latest season of Once Upon a Time continues to deliver in unexpected ways as Marian (Christie Laing) being cursed by a freezing spell sends the entire town, already concerned about the ice wall surrounding Storybrooke, after Elsa (Georgina Haig) who they hold responsible. The truth is far more complicated which Emma (Jennifer Morrison) begins to suss out as Robin (Sean Maguire) asks Regina (Lana Parrilla) to do what she can to save his wife (but who is no longer the woman who holds his heart).

Usagi Yojimbo: Senso #3

Usagi Yojimbo: Senso #3The six-issue mini-series continues with the battle stalled and the surviving battlefield warriors dealing with the alien squid invaders whose high-tech weapons and giant tripod robots prove nearly impossible to stop.

With Usagi warning the closest village of the oncoming danger it falls to Jotaro and Gen to lead the remaining forces in hopes of slowing down the aliens’ destruction and stopping the creation of more giant robots whose path of destruction have already begun to claim several lives.

The third issue of Usagi Yojimbo: Senso is heavy on action and features the death of a well-known character. It’s the second alien rocket, however, which crash lands right the middle of the village Usagi is attempting to evacuate that is the more immediate problem for the rabbit ronin if he has any hopes to surviving. I can’t wait to see where the future adventures of Usagi Yojimbo go from here. Worth a look.

New Warriors #9

New Warriors #9With the set-up of the team settled and the New Warriors victorious over the High Evolutionary I decided to pop back in on this title and give it a look. New Warriors #9 has two things going for it: lots of Scarlet Spider and an insane giant basketball mascot intent on proving himself a hero. This my friends is a good time.

Returning Kaine to Houston against his will Vance Astronik attempts to sell the hero on staying with the team when the city’s former basketball mascot, transformed into a giant 100 ft. insane bear, shows up to take down the “super-villains” and prove himself the true hero of the city. Scarlet Spider vs. giant stuffed bear? Yeah, that’s pretty awesome.

The B-story involves the rest of the team blowing off some steam by hitting a nightclub in Prague. Although it gives the various other characters less a role to play (which is fine by me with Kaine picking up the slack), this lighthearted subplot does foreshadow dark times ahead for one particular member. Must-read.

Batman ’66 #14

Batman '66 #14Although he never actually appeared on the 60s television show, there’s little doubt such a creation like the Batrobot (which we’ve seen in various forms over the years in different media such as most recently in Batman: The Brave and the Bold) would be right at home in the campy confines of this version of Gotham City.

In an issue that instructs the reader about advances in technology and their limits, Batman ’66 #14 features Batman creating a giant Batrobot to police the city giving the Dark Knight Detective and Robin a vacation. Despite the early successes the robot taking down the likes of Clock King, Louie Lilac, and the Archer, the robots limitations are revealed when it fails to handle the team-up of the illogical combination of the Joker and the Riddler. It looks like Batman’s job is safe for the time being.
