Psych - Lock, Stock, Some Smoking Barrels and Burton Guster's Goblet of Fire

Psych opens its final season with a trip to England for Shawn (James Roday) and Gus (Dulé Hill) and the return of Cary Elwes as one of the show’s most entertaining recurring characters: international jewel and art thief Pierre Despereaux. However, he is no longer Despereaux. It turns out the entire art thief existence was nothing more than a deep undercover role by a well-respected Interpol agent (a story Gus doesn’t buy for a second) who now needs Shawn’s help due to the psychic detective’s strong resemblance to a getaway driver Interpol needs to take down London crime boss Ronnie Ives (Vinnie Jones).

Atomic Robo and The Savage Sword of Dr. Dinosaur #4

Atomic Robo and The Savage Sword of Dr. Dinosaur #4With Tesladyne under full-scale attack based on the convincing frame job by Majestic 12 to present Atomic Robo and the company as nuclear terrorists, Robo and his action scientists have their own hands full with Dr. Dinosuar, not one but two armies of magma creatures, and the deranged dinosaur’s rebuilt Time-Bomb which he believes will destroy the last 65 million years.

Although much of the issue deals with the scientists both joining an army in Hollow Earth and fighting for control of Tesladyne, Atomic Robo and The Savage Sword of Dr. Dinosaur #4 also brings our hero and villain back together for some insane, and truly wonderful, banter.

With only a single issue left, Jenkins captured and Tesladyne in the hands of their enemies, and Dr. Dinosaur detonating his absurd creation, there’s still quite a bit of ground to cover to find out just how Atomic Robo and his friends defeat his supremely-awesome arch-nemesis and get out of this one. Best of the week.

The Wolf of Wall Street

The Wolf of Wall StreetBased on Jordan Belfort‘s own accounts, The Wolf of Wall Street stars Leonardo DiCaprio as an aspiring stockbroker whose discovery of penny stocks, and how they could be used to earn a broker far more profit than an investor, led to his meteoric rise and eventual downfall. Reuniting with DiCaprio and choosing The SopranosTerence Winter to adapt Belfort’s book, director Martin Scorsese‘s three-hour comedy highlights the absurdity and tragedy of Belfort’s life on Wall Street while making a pretty strong argument for the entire industry’s inherently-flawed nature which only feeds on humanity’s worst impulses.

Three hours is too long for a comedy, any comedy, but I’ll give credit to Winter and Scorsese for producing the funniest movie I saw all year. Part of this is due to the nature of the story and how Scorsese chooses to frame it for maximum effect and part is in the casting. Jonah Hill (as Belfort’s best-friend and partner) and Matthew McConaughey (in the far smaller role of Belfort’s mentor) both provide bizarre, but also often hilarious, moments.

Nikita - Bubble

The penultimate episode of Nikita offers us the calm before the storm, at least until harsh reality cracks the illusion of victory and safety Nikita (Maggie Q) and her team believe they have won. We begin with Nikita, Michael (Shane West), Ryan (Noah Bean), Sonya (Lyndie Greenwood), and Birkhoff (Aaron Stanford) all living in suburban homes on a Washington military base. In a single montage “Bubble” offers each of their separate testimony over the dark history of Division and the roads that have led them to this point which leads to Nikita becoming the hero of the story Washington desperately needs to present to frame the story and end the national nightmare.
