The first episode of Ms. Marvel introduces us to Iman Vellani as plucky Muslim American teenager and Captain Marvel fangirl Kamala Khan. Set in Jersey City, the episode is very much a traditional teenage story with Kamala sneaking out of the house to attend a fan fest with her best friend (Matt Lintz) after being forbidden to go by her more traditional parents (Zenobia Shroff and Mohan Kapur). We don’t get much in the way of super-heroing here, although when Kamala adds a very special bracelet to her costume during a Captain Marvel costume contest things get interesting. We should see more exploration of her new powers as the series continues.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds – Children of the Comet

Our first real episode of seeing the crew of the Enterprise on a mission involves the crew’s attempt to divert a comet from hitting an inhabited world in the Persephone system only to discover defenses on the comet and a ship of highly-advanced aliens who worship it and refuse to let anyone alter its divine path. The episode is most notable for giving us Cadet Uhura‘s (Celia Rose Gooding) first away mission and exploring a bit of her path towards Starfleet. While not certain she’s found a permanent home in Starfleet at the beginning of the episode, she’s far more comfortable with her choices and role aboard the Enterprise by the episode’s conclusion.

Set in the 1960s, the Hellboy one-shot Night of the Cyclops features Hellboy being led to a cursed village in Greece where its inhabitants believe him to be the hero foretold to end their suffering. To do so all Hellboy needs to do is fight a cyclops and stand up to the goddess Aphrodite whose jealousy led to the curse generations ago.
