Hellboy: The Bones of Giants #1

The four-issue mini-series adaptation of Hellboy: The Bones of Giants begins here with Hellboy and Abe Sapien sent to Sweden to investigate the discovery of what appears to be the smoking skeletal remains of the Norse God Thor. After picking up the hammer, Hellboy witnesses odd visions and becomes temporarily possessed. Even after regaining his senses, Hellboy is incapable of laying the hammer down and still seems mentally connected to the hammer’s pull leading the group to a cave in the mountains which has recently been disturbed.

Looking for help on the unusual situation Professor Edmond Aickman who isn’t exactly pleased to see Hellboy even decades after their previous encounter involving King Vold, but he is initially quite curious about the hammer although something concerns him enough to flee in the dead of the night. Just what has Hellboy stumbled into this time?

“The Golf Job” offers the first boys’ night episode without Nate while also giving us the return of Leverage recurring character Jack Hurley (Drew Powell) and providing an episode to integrate Harry (Noah Wyle), who witnesses something suspicious on the golf course and pushes the trio into action, further into the team. Hurley’s return provides it’s share of laughs (and references to past episodes), particularly in his interactions with Eliot (Christian Kane) on the golf course as they attempt to turn a con against a human trafficker (James Marsters) keeping his employees in a state of constant fear.

Stargirl wraps up its Second Season with everyone on deck for the final battle against Eclipso and the arrival of Sylvester Pemberton (Joel McHale) to Blue Valley as the older generation shows up not to take something away from Courtney (Brec Bassinger) but to offer help at her darkest hour and stick around to show Stargirl a few tricks with the staff next season.  I’ll be interested to see McHale in the role of mentor to Stargirl, and see how Sylvester and Pat (Luke Wilson) may clash as their old hero/sidekick dynamic is replaced by something new.

Usagi Yojimbo #23

“Ransom” continues with Kiyoko‘s kidnapping by Boss Hasegawa’s warriors as Miyamoto Usagi and his cousin Yukichi Yamamoto are given until sunrise to return Boss Hasegawa’s stolen ledger if they want to see Kiyoko again. The circumstances aren’t helped with the local thief, realizing how much the book is worth, steals it from Kitsune leaving our heroes with nothing to trade for Kiyoko’s life.

Usagi Yojimbo #23 is a solid middle issue of the arc adding some drama while drawing out the trouble for our characters to be resolved within the next issue. The comic foreshadows some hope for our heroes given the one honorable member of Boss Hasegawa’s soldiers who keeps Kiyoko safe from the others, and the Boss himself, after giving Usagi his word she would be safe until sunrise. Now, if they can just find that book…
