Far Sector #11

Far Sector #11 comic reviewThe City Enduring has exploded into chaos and with only 20% of her ring’s power remaining Sojourner Mullein is called into action to save the day. Denied their ability to vote, the @ are rebelling. Councilman Marth has staged a coup. And @BlazeofGlory has usurped power from the usurpers and is attempting to gain control of the city. Oh, there are also the bombs placed around the city by the Council to prevent something like this from happening, which have no started to go off, and the fleet of warships that just showed up. It’s been kind of a day.

The penultimate issue of the series sets the stage for an action-packed finale as Jo’s work is cut out for her. With no support, and the entire city on fire from multiple threats, she’ll need to work quickly in order to prevent the end of the City Enduring (and stopping @BlazeofGlory from looking at Earth to be a ripe new home).

Home #1

Home #1 comic reviewWith all the other awful and incompetent aspects of Donald Trump’s presidency some may have forgotten the zero tolerance policy towards immigration that separated parents from children under brutal circumstances with lasting effects (hundreds have still yet to be reunited with their families). This provides the backdrop for the first issue of Home in which writer and Julio Anta and artist Anna Wieszczyk take an unflinching look through the eyes of Mercedes Gomez and her son Juan who attempt to enter the United States legally under refuge status only find the harsh reality of the “Icebox” facility far different than the promise of safety.

Young Hellboy: The Hidden Land #2

Young Hellboy: The Hidden Land #2 comic reviewThe second issue of Young Hellboy: The Hidden Land provides more information about Scarlett Santiago who had become a cult figure and something of a vigilante prior to disappearing over the ocean. Crashing on the hidden island, the Sky Devil was taken in by the island’s ape men known as the Ohnar who not only saved the young woman’s life but also transferred into her the power of their god-spirit Un-Gaah (allowing her to transform into a giant ape herself which turns out to be a useful skill when saving Hellboy from a T-Rex).

Perry Mason - The Case of the Sulky Girl television review

Throwback Tuesday takes us back to the courtroom of Perry Mason. Perry Mason (Raymond Burr) gets not one but two clients in “The Case of the Sulky Girl” when he’s hired first by a willful young woman (Olive Sturgess) looking to get under the thumb of her uncle (Raymond Greenleaf) and later her secret husband (Brian G. Hutton) who becomes the prime suspect when the uncle turns up dead. The episode offers a strong set-up with a witness to the crime as well as offering up the housekeeper (Lillian Bronson) as a strong red herring to the murder. Starting with the theory that his client is indeed innocent, Mason looks to unravel the facts which all seem to point to his guilt including a phone call to the police and the witness to the crime both of which he manages to weaken in the courtroom until eliciting a confession about what truly happened.

King Kong

King Kong DVD review1976’s King Kong holds up fairly well nearly 45 years after its release. The first remake of the 1933 film, producer Dino De Laurentiis and director John Guillermin‘s film is memorable for its practical effects including the mechanical Kong mask developed by Carlo Rambaldi and Rick Baker giving Kong’s face a wide range of emotion. While some of the composite shots merging Kong with the world aren’t as effective today, there’s still quite a bit of movie magic. Baker also credits cinematographer Richard H. Kline whose work he felt hid the limitations of what could be done with Kong at the time.

Updating the story a bit to fit with the times, the ship isn’t searching for exotic locations but instead that of an oil company executive (Charles Grodin) looking to drill. Stowing away is paleontologist Jack Prescott (Jeff Bridges) who has his own reasons for wanting to visit the island. The ship also picks up the sole survivor of a shipwreck, aspiring actress Dwan (Jessica Lange), who completes a cast supplemented by the ship’s crew and the natives they will encounter on the island.
