Hellboy in Love: The Art of Fire #1

Picking up the thread from the first Hellboy in Love mini-series, this new two-part adventures offers another pairing with Anastasia Bransfield. Set in the Fall of 1979, Hellboy and Anastasia head to Iceland to the mystery that first sent the archeologist down the rabbit hole of the supernatural. While the pair seem happy together we do see that their relationship is putting a strain on other aspects of their lives with the university commenting on Anastasia’s choice of spending her time and the Hellboy going silent towards his friends and family at the B.P.R.D.

Adapted from Patrick O’Brian’s nautical novels, 2003’s Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World takes us aboard the HMS Surprise captained by Jack Aubrey (Russell Crowe) during the Napoleonic Wars. After barely escaping an attack by a superior French vessel, Aubrey and his crew repair the ship at sea rather than flee home in disgrace. After being bested again, and learning a bit about camouflage from a discussion with the ship’s doctor (Paul Bettany) about an insect on the Galapagos Islands he wishes to study (along with other flora and fauna), the captain sets on a plan to give his ship a fighting chance.

This time Pugsley (Isaac Ordonez) joins her as well (who will end up having his own unexpected adventure in accidentally raising the dead while investigating the school’s most famous ghost story). While struggling with her sudden fame, the idea that her mother (Catherine Zeta-Jones) might be sticking around to help with the school’s upcoming gala, and uncertainties over the school’s new principal (Steve Buscemi), Wednesday will also stumble upon new mysteries to solve.

It will be interesting to see if American audiences will be patient enough for the slow burn of writer/director Zach Cregger‘s Weapons which takes place one month after all but one student from an elementary classroom each leave their homes at exactly 2:17am one morning and disappear into the night. Presented in a series of vignettes highlighting different characters, some of which overlap more than others, the film digs into the trauma and fear the kids’ disappearance has caused before the movie, eventually, reveals the truth behind events. And, if you are patient enough to wait for it, Weapons delivers one of the most memorable climactic sequences in recent memory.

The third and fourth episodes see Yoon E-na (Kim Da-mi) further insert herself into the life of Kim Han-saem (Son Suk-ku) by joining the department to profile the killer of Mi-young (and even invites herself to dinner with Han-saem and his mother). While he continues to suspect her guilt in the death of her uncle, the detective does learn to respect her skills as a profile over the two episodes as the pair keep getting thrown together against his wishes. As a prime suspect is revealed, dumping a body before disappearing, E-na makes one more important observation that even Han-saem must admire.
