The Good Place - The Ballad of Donkey Doug television review

After learning the truth (again) and concluding that they will use their remaining time on Earth to help others avoid the Bad Place, Jason (Manny Jacinto) leads the group to the magical location of Jacksonville where he hopes to save Donkey Doug’s (Mitch Narito) soul. Jason has offered many tales of Donkey Doug during his time with the group, but the one fact he left out is that Donkey Doug is is father. What’s interesting here as the show delves in to the hilariously depressing relationship between Jason, Donkey Doug, and Pillboi (Eugene Cordero) is that the episode conclusion with an idea that, despite what these four people accomplished together, flies in the face of the show’s core idea that everybody can be saved.

“So the Devil is back.”

Daredevil - Please / No Good Deed television review

The second and third episodes of Daredevil‘s Third Season focus on Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) striking a deal with the FBI and Matt Murdock‘s (Charlie Cox) continuing struggle as he slowly recovers more and more of his gifts. In a poetic choice (or cliched, depending on your point of view), Murdock’s hearing returns at the exact moment for him to learn that Fisk is free once more. Stalking his prey, and even taking out a half-dozen members of the FBI protecting the Kingpin, Daredevil begins hallucinate a version of Fisk speaking directly to him, egging him on to bring the fight and fury back to his enemy. Even with his hearing know fully restored, it doesn’t look like the tortured soul angle is going to fade away any time soon. The two episodes are also noticeable for introducing an important supporting character in FBI Agent Benjamin Poindexter (Wilson Bethel) who comic fans will know by another name.

The Flash - The Death of Vibe television review

Despite the episode’s title, Cisco (Carlos Valdes) will survive to banter sarcastically for another day (although his super-hero days appear to be over for the time being). Instead, “The Death of Vibe” is memorable for two things. First, the return of Tom Cavanagh as yet another parallel Earth version of Harrison Wells who is brought in to help find Cicada (Chris Klein). And second, Nora (Jessica Parker Kennedy) coming to terms with her time travel affecting history, yep she’s definitely Barry‘s (Grant Gustin) daughter, and learning to slow down before impulsively racing into action. XS may have the makings of a super-hero after all (if she can get over those mommy issues the show keeps hinting strongly at).

Spider-Gwen: Ghost-Spider #1

Spider-Gwen: Ghost-Spider #1 comic reviewAlthough exists as a tie-in to Marvel’s new Spidey event Spider-Geddon, Spider-Gwen: Ghost-Spider #1 is largely disconnected from its events (other than an appearance by Spider-Ham, which I’m always on-board with). Instead, the comic centers around the recently paroled Gwen Stacy who is just starting to get back into the swing of things before taking a large detour through Spider-Geddon (summed up on a single page) before being dropped back onto a different Earth.

The writing from Seanan McGuire, especially Gwen’s internal monologue, is fun and breezy and reminds me of old school Spider-Man. Rosi Kämpe’s art matches the writing and the spirit of the character. Although it starts out by acknowledging recent events and troubles for Gwen, dropping her off on a new Earth gives the comic (and character) a fresh start here that should work well for new readers not interesting in diving in too deep to her backstory.

Legends of Tomorrow - The Virgin Gary television review

Despite Constantine‘s (Matt Ryan) warning at the end of last season, the Legends successfully complete their task of fixing the last of the anachronisms, earning the appreciation of the Time Bureau, and some time off for the team. While this means a trip home for Nate (Nick Zano) and some short-lived domestic bliss for Sara (Caity Lotz), new trouble in the timeline sends the team back to Woodstock where an unicorn is goring its way through hippies at an alarming rate turning the celebration of peace into a historical tragedy. Oh, and it ejaculates hallucinogenic sparks from its horn, making its victims more controllable. Its good to have the time traveling screw-ups back.
