Lois & Clark - Neverending Battle

With a new Superman ready to fly into theaters this summer every now and then I’ll continue to take a look back at the hero’s more memorable moments on both the big and small screen. Just how powerful is the Man of Steel? That’s the question asked in “Neverending Battle.” As Superman-mania grips The Daily Planet, and Lois (Teri Hatcher) does whatever she can to scoop the story, Lex Luthor (John Shea) designs a series of tests to discover the limits of Superman‘s (Dean Cain) powers. In a clever nod back to the 1940s radio show, Luthor’s theorizes and surmises about Superman being “faster than a speeding bullet,” “more powerful than a locomotive,” and “able to leap buildings in a single bound.”

Morning Glories #27

Morning Glories #27The second season of Morning Glories begins here with Casey‘s return from the past thanks to Hunter and the older Jade resetting the timeline. If you think that means things are going to be less complicated from here on out, you haven’t been reading this comic. After convincing they younger version of herself and her parents to enroll in Morning Glories Academy, Casey steps out of the cave with the memories, but not the mileage, of those experiences to punch Miss Hodge squarely in the jaw.

As the older Jade explains the new status quo to Hunter, the game pieces have all been reset to the their original places but the rules themselves have been completely out the window. What happens from here on out with Irina, Abraham, and the saving or destruction of the academy will largely depend on what Casey does next.

For a Morning Glories comic issue #27 is pretty straightforward. We also get to interesting features at the back of the comic including summary and supposition from “Professor Meylikhov” and a cute recap of the first season. Worth a look.

Covert Affairs - The Complete Third Season

The Third Season begins with the death of one of the show’s major supporting characters and ends with Annie (Piper Perabo) and Auggie (Christopher Gorham) finally admitting their true feelings for each other. In-between the season gives us love, betrayal, the return of old friends, murder, an escape from a Russian prison, and revenge. After witnessing Jai Wilcox‘s (Sendhil Ramamurthy) death, Annie finds herself reassigned to a new division run by Lena Smith (Sarah Clarke), an old rival of Joan‘s (Kari Matchett) who gives her agents far more freedom than Annie is used to. Under Lena’s direction, Annie begins cultivating a new asset and lover, FSB Agent and master spy Simon Fischer (Richard Coyle) whose fate will be tied to Annie’s through most of the season.

Season Three also returns Oded Fehr as Mossad Agent Eyal Lavine for several episodes including Annie’s trip to Israel, rescuing his friend from a Russian prison, searching for a Mossad asset in Washington, and the season ending arc where he helps Annie take down a mutual enemy.

Atomic Robo Presents Real Science Adventures #8

Atomic Robo Presents Real Science Adventures #8Realizing someone is after his technology, Nikola Tesla hires a Master Wong Kei-Ying and Annie Oakley to protect the scientist’s Magnifying Transmitter which Tesla is moving by train. It’s a good thing he did to, as the train is hijacked and the unlikely pair of a martial artist and cocky sharpshooter are all that stand in the way of the shadowy group getting their hands on another of Tesla’s inventions.

There’s plenty of action here involving Wong taking down a train load of robbers and the explosion of the train itself when it becomes necessary to destroy Tesla’s invention rather than allow it to fall into the wrong hands. Wong and Oakley make for an amusing pair who I wouldn’t mind see more of in the future.

The back-up story concludes Atomic Robo and his group’s discovery of a giant robot in Egypt. As Robo and the other scientist argue how best to continue with the creature looming large before them, Jenkins takes matters into his own hands and settles the question once and for all. Worth a look.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #22

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #22Tired of the encroaching Savante and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles both meddling in his plans for the city, the Shredder decides to lay a trap by kidnapping Casey Jones and forcing the Turtles and Splinter to rush in and save him without the time to come up with a plan.

The ensuing fight features all four Turtles, plenty of Foot Ninja, Alopex, Karai, and even Shredder himself who give the Turtles a little more incentive to jump immediately into the fray and save their wounded friend. Although the Turtles manage to drag the Casey to safety, the Shredder’s plan works to perfection as one member of the group doesn’t make it out of the fight. Trading Casey for Leonardo, Shredder’s plans for his would-be new first lieutenant (teased months ago) can now begin in earnest.

I don’t envy any artist starting a new arc following and issue Kevin Eastman drew himself. Honestly, I have a mixed reaction to the art by Mateus Santolouco, especially with his depiction of April. Some of the action sequences are well done, but I think it’s going to take me some time to get used to his style. Worth a look.
