Jack Reacher: Never Go Back

Jack Reacher: Never Go BackTom Cruise seems to have found himself a new action franchise. These movies may not be in league with Mission: Impossible films, but for trashy B-movie action flicks you could do worse than Jack Reacher and it’s sequel. Returning as former Military Police Officer turned hermit Jack Reacher, Cruise is pulled back to Washington when his phone-friend Major Susan Turner (Cobie Smulders) gets herself arrested.

After breaking Major Turner out of prison, Reacher and his new partner search for answers as to who really killed the soldiers under her command and the reason why someone is going to such trouble to hide the truth. Along the way they will also pick-up a teenage girl (Danika Yarosh) who is targeted by the shadowy private military organization (is there any other type?) responsible for framing Turner. Without giving away the reasons for her involvement in the adventure, the subplot does offer a stronger emotional tie to Reacher’s mission the second time around.

The sequel lacks the over-the-top crazy villain Werner Herzog provided in the first film but has plenty of private soldiers for Reacher to take down (sometimes quite brutally) over the film’s two-hour running time.

Supergirl - The Last Children of Krypton

Superman‘s (Tyler Hoechlin) time in National City comes to a close as he and Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) team-up to fight Metallo (Frederick Schmidt) and Cadmus (which apparently isn’t so much a secret government organization but a group of mad scientists and very public terrorists). While enjoying her time with Clark saving the day, Kara struggles with her work life as her first day as a reporter doesn’t go as planned. News that Cat Grant (Calista Flockhart) is taking a leave of absence doesn’t help matters any. However, when push comes to shove, Supergirl finds she has plenty of family sticking around starting with her sister Alex (Chyler Leigh) – who is given the opportunity to kick her share of ass in this episode.

Supergirl - The Adventures of Supergirl

With Supergirl moving from CBS and joining the other DC Comics television properties on The CW there were questions about how much the show would change. Picking up just seconds after the First Season finale, Supergirl kicks off its Second Season with a strong opener. The entire core cast returns with some important additions and minor tweaks. First, the DEO has moved from their lonely cave to a downtown skyscraper – and has a new employee in Winn (Jeremy Jordan) who is now in far better position to help Supergirl (Melissa Benoist). Second, the city is now also home to Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath), the stepsister of the world’s wealthiest federal prisoner. And then, of course, there’s Superman.

Mechanic: Resurrection

Mechanic: ResurrectionThe follow-up to 2011’s The Mechanic returns Jason Statham as retired hitman Arthur Bishop. After faking his death, Bishop has lived the good life in Rio until a courier (Yayaying Rhatha Phongam) for an old frenemy (Sam Hazeldine) throws Bishop’s life into chaos. After falling for the honeypot (Jessica Alba) sent in to earn his trust, Bishop is blackmailed into committing the impossible assassinations of the world’s three largest arms dealers (Femi Elufowoju Jr., Toby Eddington, and Tommy Lee Jones) in a matter of days when he fails to prevent her kidnapping.

Better than the first film, director Dennis Gansel relies too heavily at times on close shaky-cam quick-cut action scenes. The script by Philip Shelby and Tony Mosher is more convoluted than necessary for a rather straightforward action film. Because of this the story requires a bit more set-up, following the open action sequence, before the movie really gets going. The set-up is really just an excuse to throw Statham into action scenes in multiple exotic locales (Thailand, Brazil, and Australia). On that level it works pretty well, especially during it’s best scene involving Bishop’s murder by swimming pool.

Supergirl - The Complete First SeasonCasting Melissa Benoist as Kara Zor-El, the First Season of Supergirl added Superman’s cousin to the DC television stable. Not as consistent as Arrow, and not as fun as The Flash, Supergirl had her growing pains in the First Season as Kara worked to balance her life as assistant to a demanding media mogul (Calista Flockhart) and working with a secret government agency to corral super-powered prisoners who escaped from a Kryptonian prison.

Highlights of the show’s First Season include a crossover with the Flash, Supergirl exposed to Red Krptonite and the Black Mercy, J’onn Jonzz‘s (David Harewood) history revealed, political upheaval at the DEO, the first appearance of the Toyman, and Supergirl’s struggle to defend the city without her powers.

Available on both Blu-ray and DVD, extras include deleted scenes, gag reel, and featurettes on Krypton, the Martian Manhunter, and Comic-Con.
