Daredevil – Straight to Hell

  • Title: Daredevil: Born Again – Straight to Hell

“Straight to Hell” ends rather than concludes the first season revival of Daredevil. Using both Bullseye (Wilson Bethel) being at large and Matt Murdock‘s (Charlie Cox) heroically saving his life as an excuse, Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) cracks down on the city giving him a chance to silent his detractors and impose his order on the city. Murdock escapes the hospital before the assassin (Arty Froushan) comes for him, and joins a (suddenly motivated) Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal) on the streets. We also get the return of Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) which, like the Punisher’s involvement, feels more like a setup to Season Two than a big moment in and of itself (although the pair’s snooping does lead to a revelation concerning the motive for Foggy‘s death).

Obviously an attempt to cash into the success of Point Break 3 years earlier, Wesley Snipes stars as U.S. Marshal Pete Nessip consumed a prison escape at 30,000ft. masterminded by skydiver Ty Moncrief (Gary Busey) disguised as a terrorist attack in which his brother (Malcolm-Jamal Warner) was killed. Moncrief plans to use the rescued computer expert (Michael Jeter) to hack the DEA’s mainframe. Suspended for his theories, Pete continues to investigate on his own leading him to ex-con Jessie Crossman (Yancy Butler) and her skydiving school in the Florida Keys.

After a (bit too prolonged) trip to Los Angeles to set up the gun buy and trap the bad guys, the final two episodes of the series push Duffy (Sonya Cassidy) to bring the case to the ATF over  Reacher‘s (Alan Ritchson) objections. They quickly bench the group, set up a sting for the gun sale, and walk right into a trap set by Xavier Quinn (Brian Tee). Reacher manages to survive the blood bath, but the ATF is going to need some new guys. With the guard rails off again, Reacher turns his attention back on the family compound and revenge.

The Rock

Flashback Friday takes us back to director Michael Bay‘s best film. Sure you could make a case for Armageddon, and some (not me) would argue for Bad Boys II. However, the most successful movie of the popcorn director’s career is unquestionably the 1996 film that united Sean Connery as an aging British Secret Agent unjustly imprisoned for decades after stealing the United States’ most precious secrets and Nicolas Cage as an FBI chemist who find themselves responsible for saving the lives of 81 hostages from mercenaries who have taken control of Alcatraz.

Daredevil – Isle of Joy

  • Title: Daredevil: Born Again – Isle of Joy

Moving past the Muse storyline as quickly as possible, which was little more than a blip, “Isle of Joy” offers and episode focusing on our hero and villain’s relationships with storylines designed to bring one couple together and (perhaps unnecessarily) pull the other apart. Despite several characters telling us over and over again that Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) has become erratic and emotional, I think that’s more than a bit of an overstatement to ultimately get the episode where it needs to go in the time allotted. He’s certainly less than happy to learn the about his girlfriend’s relationship with the Mayor and, as one might expect (especially someone like a psychiatrist), he’s running a bit hot after a face-to-face with the man who killed his best friend.
