MacGyver – Pilot

MacGyver Monday takes us back to the very first adventure featuring science-adventurer Angus MacGyver (Richard Dean Anderson). Much of the pieces to MacGyver are already in place in the show’s “Pilot” episode which starts with an unrelated opening gambit of MacGyver saving a crashed pilot and retrieving the circuit board. We don’t have to wait long to get our first MacGyverism as MacGyver builds a contraption to divide the guards’ attention and uses a flare gun as as a rocket thruster to help secure their escape. The episode includes an appearance by Dana Elcar but as a different character than the one who would be incorporated as a recurring character later in the First Season.

Delayed a year due to the 2023 strike which halted production for months, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two finally makes it into theaters under the new title Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning with a bloated runtime of 170- minutes filled with moments and marketing reinforcing the idea this could be Ethan Hunt’s (Tom Cruise) final mission (despite Cruise repeatedly saying he isn’t done with the franchise) in hopes of garnering interest in a film whose production costs skyrocketed making it one of the most expensive movies ever made.

The latest from writer/director Joe Carnahan is a mostly forgettable throwaway action flick featuring Kerry Washington and Omar Sy as former black-ops who come back together to protect their young son (Jahleel Kamara) and kill their former boss (Mark Strong) who has raised the bounty on their heads after a situation in a bank alerts him to their present. The rest of the cast includes the pair’s former co-workers (Marvin Jones III, Yoson An, Natalia Reyes, Jénel Stevens, and Sala Baker) now hunting them and other agents whose loyalties are more circumspect (Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Method Man, Marshall Cook, and Ed Quinn).

A Minecraft Movie

This is  bad. Inoffensive, but bad. Geared towards younger audiences, and fans of the game which has been around since 2011, A Minecraft Movie is a train wreck of a film that other than it’s design has very little going for it. The story involves people finding their way into this alternate dimension where you can build basically any squarish item you can imagine. We start we Steve (Jack Black) who is the first to find the realm but unintentionally puts it in danger from the equivalent of a failed America’s Got Talent contestant turned evil queen.
