Novocaine

Novocaine is an odd film that starts out as an awkward romantic comedy, turns sharply into a Heat-esque serious hardcore heist film, and then for the remainder becomes an adrenaline-fueled action film which could only be compared to something like Crank. It’s one of those films where the wild antics don’t so much take over the story but, for the majority of the film, simply are the story. At times, it’s a bit much for my tastes and could have taken more opportunity to pull back and let its actors (who are doing a good job) breathe.

Reacher – Dominique

  • Title: Reacher – Dominique
  • IMDb: link

“There are very few people you meet in life that do everything right. The way they think, attack problems, conduct themselves. How they keep things loose when a joke is needed or keep their powder dry when things get tight.”

While playing on recent events, the majority of “Dominique” focuses on an extended flashback which introduces the impressive Sergeant First Class Dominique Kohl (Mariah Robinson) who worked under Reacher before his Special Investigators phase. The pair’s first case involved a soldier (Johnathan Sousa) leaking military secrets under threat from a military intelligence officer targeting his family. That officer’s name was Xavier Quinn (Brian Tee).

Reacher – Number 2 with a Bullet

While Neagley (Maria Sten) does some research on the people Reacher (Alan Ritchson) is working for, the third episode of Reacher‘s Third Season focuses mainly on Reacher covering up his own mess and maneuvering himself into a stronger position within Zachary Beck’s (Anthony Michael Hall) organization. This involves sneaking out for a moonlit swim and, with the help of Susan Duffy (Sonya Cassidy), hiding the body of Angel (Manuel Rodriguez-Saenz) and the two drivers who walk in on them. Then, using the disappearances of the three men to his advantage, Reacher manages to take out Duke (Donald Sales) paving the way for Reacher to become Beck’s new #1 guy.

Daredevil: Born Again – Heaven’s Half Hour

  • Title: Daredevil: Born Again – Heaven’s Half Hour

In a perfect world, the events of the first 10 minutes of Daredevil: Born Again would have taken place as part of another MCU movie or show. After the (already leaked) events that open the show, “Heaven’s Half Hour” jumps a year forward to reintroduce our core characters and new supporting ones. Bringing us back to status quo, only to jump forward to a new reality, and then likely to return back to familiar ground in a couple of episodes does feel unnecessarily messy. If these events had actually occurred a year (or more) ago, and we were left to stew on them in real time, the lose and our new introduction would have had far more dramatic effect. However, despite the glut of content Marvel continues to pour out, and attempts to keep all events connected across the MCU, none of these other shows, or even films, have had the dramatic weight to contain these sequences.

Reacher – Truckin’

After performing an unorthodox loyalty test, Reacher (Alan Ritchson) snoops a bit after hours looking for the missing informant (Storm Steenson) before beginning his job as part of Zachary Beck’s (Anthony Michael Hall) crew. Paired with Angel (Manuel Rodriguez-Saenz), his first job involves looking into the kidnapping which requires some quick thinking on the part of Susan Duffy (Sonya Cassidy). Although successful, from Reacher’s point of view, things end poorly for Angel who isn’t the only member of the crew Reacher picks a fight with in the episode.
