Wrath of Man

Guy Ritchie and Jason Statham unite for a by-the-numbers revenge flick. Statham stars as a notorious violent crime lord who takes a job as the new security guard for an armored car company that has been the target of several recent robberies, including one that killed his son. It doesn’t take long for the other members of the company to discover H (Statham) is way overqualified for the job and there’s obviously something more to the story of what he’s doing there (which will be exposed slowly in a series of flashbacks that lead to inevitable questions of how blind everyone working for the company is in not recognizing H).

The Batman

Save me from early-career Batman films. For once, can’t I just get a Batman at the height of his physical and mental prowess (in a movie that doesn’t star George Clooney)? Sadly, that’s not what’s in store with Matt Reeves‘ stylish The Batman taking place during the second year of Batman‘s (Robert Pattinson) run as a now police sanctioned, but certainly not beloved, vigilante. Reeves hits on themes of class struggle and the effects of loss (specifically being orphaned) and how these affect the three main characters in the film in different ways. Top Gun: Maverick

From the opening credits, Top Gun: Maverick lays heavy into the nostalgia by recreating the opening of Top Gun. Not much has changed since we last saw Maverick (Tom Cruise), the film is deliberately vague about what year the movie takes place and exactly how much time has passed. Pete Mitchell is still the maverick who flies by the seat of his pants even if that has left him at yet another crossroads of his decorated, but rocky, career.

If you weren’t alive in 1986 it’s hard to explain how big Top Gun was. Now, nearly four decades later, a sequel is about to hit theaters so it’s time for Throwback Tuesday to look back at the movie which introduced us to the United States Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor program and United States Naval Aviator Lieutenant Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in a role that would solidify Tom Cruise as a movie star. Cruise so loved the film, he found a way to star in nearly the same story four years later with Days of Thunder.

Chip ‘n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers

More than once while watching Chip ‘n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers I wondered to myself who this movie is for? The short-lived TV-series which ran from 1989-1990 gets a reboot of sorts here in a bizarre set up which mergers two-dimensional animated characters, three-dimensional CGI characters, and real actors. It’s kind of like Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, in terms of setup and a mystery to be solved, except it never finds a way to blend its various elements into a cohesive whole.
