The penultimate episode of the final season of Supergirl is full of doubt, mistakes, fear, betrayal, really bad decisions and loss as Lex Luthor (Jon Cryer) and Nyxly (Peta Sergeant) kidnap Esme (Mila Jones) in order to get their hands on all of the totems and recreate the AllStone. With the heroes floundering in all directions, Alex (Olivia Nikkanen) prepares to hand over the totems aware that it will likely bring about a post-apocalyptic future while Brainy (Jesse Rath) plans to super-charge Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) by stealing power from the sun and doing irreparable harm to the world. Led by fear, Kara goes along with the plan frightening the citizens and the government alike, only deciding to stop at the last possible second (which is odd, because wouldn’t that make her 99% more powerful AND done 99% of the damage?).

Free Guy

While you could certainly turn down some of the Deapool-esqe winking at the audience, and the plot is certainly not breaking the mold on the type of story we’ve seen done before, Free Guy is easily one of most fun movies of 2021. Ryan Reynolds stars as a non-player character in the world’s most popular video game who breaks outside of his programing and starts to become more than he was designed to be. What makes things work is Blue Shirt Guy, or simply Guy, is immensely likable. He’s just a good guy whose head has been turned by a beautiful girl (Jodie Comer) and begins making changes to his life that effect both the video game world and the perception of it in the real world.

Bulldog Drummond Escapes

Adapted from the the novels of H. C. McNeile, and part of Paramount’s series following the First World War veteran turned gentleman adventurer, Bulldog Drummond Escapes was released in 1937 starring Ray Milland as the title character, Guy Standing as the disapproving local police inspector, and Heather Angel as a damsel in distress.

Re-released as part of The Film Detective’s Restored Classics, Bulldog Drummond Escapes feels a bit dated in places no more so than the opening sequence involving Drummond’s plane landing back in England. Getting into trouble his first night back, he stumbles on a murder, has his car stolen by a young woman who is later recaptured by those holding her against her will, gets on the wrong side of the local police with the help of his old friend (Reginald Denny) and butler (E.E. Clive), and eventually uncovers a counterfeit plot and, of course, saves the girl.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage

I wasn’t the biggest fan of 2018’s Venom which reimagined the comic book villain as a standalone horror flick hero. The new sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage has many of the first film’s issues, but when it embraces its craziness it can, at times, be fun. Sadly, as with the first film, one of the big failings of the sequel is the writing which takes forever to get the plot moving and, for some inexplicable reason, even abandons its most successful aspect of the series by separating Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) and the symbiote for an extended period this time around.

No Time to Die

Daniel Craig‘s tenure as British Secret Agent James Bond comes to an end as the troubled No Time to Die (first delayed by a director swap then by COVID) finally makes it into theaters. More than Craig’s last film, the four writers credited to the film set out to make it Bond’s last film creating a scenario where Craig both begins (Casino Royale) and ends Bond’s legacy. For those agree that Craig is the definitive Bond, the choice may be easier to swallow than those of us who believe, at best, he ranks third or fourth in a franchise spanning nearly 60 years.
