Batman: The Long Halloween (Part Two) DVD reviewBatman: The Long Halloween (Part Two) concludes the two-part adaptation of Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale‘s thirteen-issue maxi-series. Part Two races through the remainder of the story with more villains, more holidays, flashbacks to a young Bruce Wayne, the birth of Two-Face (Josh Duhamel), and (when it remembers to get around to it) the final unmasking of the Holiday killer. The adaptation takes a more definitive approach to Gilda (Julie Nathanson), playing off the heavy foreshadowing from Part One.

The movie jumps around a bit, and with so much focus on Bat-villains such as Poison Ivy (Katee Sackhoff) and Scarecrow (Robin Atkin Downes) who both put Batman out of action for a bit (seriously, Batman gets his ass handed to him quite a bit here), the actual Holiday mystery gets buried. The script also dives into a bit more of the mobster plot, and its ties to the Wayne family, along with the reveal of Catwoman‘s (Naya Rivera) interest in the Falcone family.

The Suicide Squad movie reviewWriter/director James Gunn‘s sequel to 2016’s Suicide Squad is bonkers. If Legends of Tomorrow ever makes it to the big screen, I’d expect it would look something like this (with a far smaller body count, to be sure). Bringing back a handful of the stars from the first film, with some notable absences, the story this time follows a more straightforward Task Force X plot of the criminals turned black ops soldiers by Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) sent overseas to a foreign country to cause some mayhem under the radar. Oh, and then the movie throws in Starro. Starro!? Did I mention this movie is bonkers?

Jungle Cruise movie reviewGiven Disney’s adaptation of Pirates of the Caribbean it’s hard not to see similarities with Jungle Cruise as the studio attempts to turn another theme park ride into a motion picture. Jungle Cruise feels like a mix of Pirates with a bit of The Mummy (and several other films) thrown in for a wacky adventure in the Amazon.

We’re first introduced to Dr. Lily Houghton (Emily Blunt) and her brother McGregor (Jack Whitehall) who steal an artifact from the London Historical Society to search for a legend deep in the Amazon. Lily hopes to find the Tree of Life whose blossoms are rumored to be capable of curing any disease. Enlisting the help of an untrustworthy steamboat captain (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson) the trio race to find the tree before a German aristocrat (Jesse Plemons) or centuries-old cursed jungle explorers (led by Édgar Ramírez).

The third movie of the troubled franchise, Snake Eyes: G.I. JOE Origins turns back the clock to offer an origin story for the most popular member of G.I. JOE. The film plays fast a loose with the character’s history replacing his past as a soldier with that of a underground street fighter and member of the Yakuza. Snake Eyes (Henry Golding), who is named in the most ridiculous way possible, saves the life of Tommy “Storm Shadow” Arashikage (Andrew Koji) who invites him to join his ninja clan.

Black Widow movie reviewThe movie Marvel Studios didn’t want to make finally sees the light of day. Despite being the first female hero introduced in the MCU, Marvel seemed to have no interest in giving Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) her own film until the financial success of Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel forced their hand.

First, let me say that I’m glad we get a Black Widow movie. The character rocks, Johansson is brought back with her deadpan wisecracks, and it’s thoroughly, unapologetically, over-the-top during its climactic bat-shit-crazy battle sequences.
