Human Target - Victoria television review

Throwback Tuesday takes us back to another episode from the First Season of Human Target. The penultimate episode of the show’s First Season follows the basic formula as Christopher Chance (Mark Valley) is brought in by an old friend (Erick Avari) to protect a woman in danger. The difference here is that the client he is trying to protect is the Princess of Wales and the people who want her killed are her own security. While Chance is keeping Victoria (Christina Cole) away from the assassins, Winston (Chi McBride) and Guerrero (Jackie Earle Haley) protect the woman’s lover (Rey Valentin) who is also in danger.

Tomb Raider

Tomb Raider (2018)Lara Croft is back. After the pair of financially successful (if pretty dumb) films starring Angelina Jolie in the early 2000s, the most famous video game archaeologist (sorry Mr. Jones) returns to the big screen. Because origin stories are all the rage, the latest Tomb Raider (following in the footsteps of the character’s more recent comic adventures) takes Lara back to the beginning to showcase how she became the world’s best tomb raider.

Alicia Vikander is a solid choice for a younger version of the character showcasing skills she hasn’t yet completely mastered. More grounded, with less emphasis on staging sequences for the sole reason to make her look cool, it’s certainly a more dramatic role that Jolie was given. The storyline, while taking a bit long to get going, is also better than either of the previous two movies as this time around Lara goes all Oliver Queen on a lost island where evil mercenaries hope to uncover a dangerous tomb. As an action film based on a video game Tomb Raider is surprisingly successful, even if, at times, certain sequences feel based more on questionable video-game logic than solid writing.

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider DVD reviewWith the character’s return to the big screen on Friday, this week’s throwback Tuesday takes us back to 2001’s big-screen adaptation of the Tomb Raider video game starring Angelina Jolie as English archaeologist Lara Croft. The plot centers around a mysterious artifact found in the Croft mansion, hidden inside an antique clock that begins ticking one fateful night. The artifact turns out to be tied to Lara’s missing father (Jon Voight) and the Illuminati who want to use it to gain control of time. Breaking into her insanely well-guarded home, equally insanely-prepared mercenaries make off with the key and begin a race to find the Triangle of Light which was broken in half centuries ago but with the key can be used to control time itself.

Incredibly goofy, even for a movie based off a video game, the film is largely forgettable other than for its star, ridiculous plot holes (such as granting Lara the chance to destroy half of the clock and essentially end the villains’ plans fairly early on but having her refuse to do so), and overly-elaborate sequences. Iain Glen and Daniel Craig star as the villains while Noah Taylor and Chris Barrie provide Lady Croft minimal technical support and back-up.

Kill la Kill - Trigger TV review

“Trigger” introduces a new enemy in Tsumugu Kinagase (Shin’ichirô Miki). Unlike the others who have attacked Ryūko Matoi (Ami Koshimizu) in previous episodes, Tsumugu is not a member of the school sent after our heroine but instead attacks both Ryūko and various clubs indiscriminately. The man’s needles drain the power of Goku Uniforms, making him a formidable opponent, and he has one mission: to destroy the Kamui. Unlike previous battles, Ryūko is defeated (rather soundly and repeatedly). Only the realization that Senketsu is willing to be destroyed to protect Ryūko, thus shattering the man’s preconceptions of Kamui, prevents Tsumugu from completing his mission. While certainly not a friend, it appears Tsumugu may no longer be an enemy.

Black Panther

Black Panther movie reviewWhile ultimately falling into the category of a lesser Marvel film, there’s still quite a bit to enjoy about Black Panther which develops the African country of Wakanda (which is far more advanced than almost anyone in the outside world suspects). Black Panther seems a bit out of place as Marvel gears up for its big crossover cosmic event in Infinity War as it is arguably the least connected film to the larger overall franchise since the first movies premiered a decade ago.

Taking place after the events of Captain America: Civil War, T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) returns home to assume his new role as king. Along with the beautiful scenery and high-tech gadgets, Wakanda also introduces us to some interesting supporting characters including T’Challa’s sister Shuri (Letitia Wright) who acts as a Bond-like Q, Lupita Nyong’o as a female spy and potential love interest for the new king, Danai Gurira as the head of the army, and Angela Bassett and Forest Whitaker as the elder generation ushering in the new king. Martin Freeman also reprises his role from Civil War in one of the movie’s few ties to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe.
