Despite its overcomplicated setup to get him there, which also unfortunately requires a wrap on land to be tacked on after the natural conclusion of events, Mutiny is basically Jason Statham on a boat. Following the assassination of his employer (Ramon Tikaram), Cole Reed (Statham) sneaks onboard a cargo ship where he discovers a human smuggling ring and the reasons behind his friend’s death and the corrupt local authorities framing him for the crime.

Set in a dystopian near-future (which seems to loosely blame the growing homeless for all crime in the city), the convoluted thriller from screenwriter Marco van Belle and director Timur Bekmambetov stars Chris Pratt as LAPD Detective Chris Raven. As the film opens, Raven has already been strapped to an electric chair and forced to prove his innocence to an Artificial Intelligence (played by Rebecca Ferguson) who has already judged him guilty.

Silent Night

At the end of the world, we come together and celebrate with those we love. That’s the basic idea behind the dark comedy Silent Night which sees old friends reunite for Christmas as the whole world is slowly being enveloped in a deadly gas cloud. Governments have given up and have provided suicide pills for their citizens, to avoid the more painful death brought on by the gas (which, if the children are to believed, may either be caused by environmental factors or the Russians).

The hosts for the Christmas party are Nell (Keira Knightley) and Simon (Matthew Goode) along with their twin boys (Hardy Griffin Davis and Gilby Griffin Davis) and younger son Art (Roman Griffin Davis) who is one of the few guests not so keen on mixing suicide and yuletide cheer. The other guest who is anti-pill is the younger wife (Lily-Rose Depp) of another member of the group (Sope Dirisu) who has recently discovered she is pregnant.

Tag

Tag blu-ray reviewAs Dodge Ball taught us, grown-ups playing kid games can be dumb but also surprisingly fun. Based on real people, Tag tells the story of a group of friends who has being playing tag for decades. Despite growing up, getting careers, and moving to different cities, the friends continue to play tag one month out of the year in the hopes of finally beating the one member of the group (Jeremy Renner) who has never been “it.”

Our players include Ed Helms, Jon Hamm, Jake Johnson, and Hannibal Buress. Also along for the ride are Isla Fisher as Helms’ wife, Leslie Bibb as Renner’s fiance, and Annabelle Wallis as a reporter who knows a good story when she hears one.

The film isn’t perfect. Renner’s mastery of the game is stretched to a ridiculous degree, and, in much the same vein, the script forces Fisher into some over-the-top uber-competitiveness which is only funny half the time. Still, for a game about tag there is fun to be had.

Tom Cruise vs. The Mummy and Her Zombie Horde

The Mummy movie reviewIt’s been more than eighty years since the first Mummy movie was released by Universal Pictures. Over the years the studio has put out other versions of the story, most recently with the increasingly disappointing films starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. With The Mummy not only does the studio hope to reboot the entire franchise but use the film to relaunch several of their other classic movie monster properties as part of their new interconnected Dark Universe.

From the first trailer I thought this looked like a trainwreck. Although it proves to be more entertaining than expected, I certainly wasn’t wrong. The bar for horror is pretty low, and the film does provide its share of fun even as it struggles with plot and pacing.

The movie opens by awkwardly jumping around several years and locales before finally settling in during modern day with a pair of soldiers (Tom Cruise, Jake Johnson) seeking a hidden treasure in Iraq. Let’s just say they unearth more than they bargained for. With the help of archaeologist Jenny Halsey (Sofia Boutella), whose connection to the U.S. Military is never really explained, the pair unearth the tomb of a forgotten queen of Egypt.
