Conan: The Complete QuestThe new Blu-ray release collects both original Conan movies starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as the legendary Cimmerian thief and warrior. Focused on Conan’s origin story and his quest for revenge against the evil sorcerer (James Earl Jones) who slaughtered his village as a boy and threw him into slavery, Conan the Barbarian is the better of the two movies. It also gives us Mako (who would return in the sequel) as Conan’s ally.

Following two-years later, Conan the Destroyer feels every bit the half-baked sequel it is as Conan is hired to protect a princess (Olivia d’Abo) with a terrible destiny. While not as strong as the original, Destroyer does offer some memorable moments.

The Terminator

the-terminator-dvdTerminator 2: Judgement Day is a superior action flick with huge stunts and explosions. Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines is actually a very well thought out science fiction film that fits the events of the series into perspective. The first in the series however, The Terminator, is one of the most perfect monster movies of all time featuring an unstoppable killing machine sent from the future who is programmed to kill Sarah Connor and any who get in its way.

In the future the world has been taken over by machines bent on ruling and destroying what is left of humanity the war between human and machine rages on until the year 2029 when the humans led by John Connor finally achieve victory. Unable to admit defeat a Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger), a robotic killing machine covered in flesh and blood to resemble a human, is sent back in time to kill off the leader of the rebelling humans before he is ever born. Too late to stop them, the humans send one soldier, Kyle Reese (Michael Biehn), back in time to protect Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) and history. The only question is who will get to her first?

Terminator 3: Rise of the MachinesI know there are those that feel otherwise, but I like Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines and appreciate the kind of story director Jonathan Mostow and screenwriters John D. Brancato and Michael Ferris set out to tell.

Whereas the first Terminator had no higher goal than that of straight-forward monster movie (still the best Hollywood has produced in the last 30 years), and Judgement Day was more concerned with action that developing the themes presented in the first film, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines is the only movie of the three that is actually a sci-fi film at its core. That fourth film starring Christian Bale? Yeah… we don’t talk about that one.

Picking up years after the second film, Rise involves John Connor (Nick Stahl) finally beginning to understand and embrace the destiny which was introduced in The Terminator.

Escape Plan

Escape PlanSylvester Stallone thrown into prison at the whims of a madman is hardly a new story (the plots of both Tango & Cash and Lock-Up include these themes). In Escape Plan, Stallone stars as expert prison escape artist Joe Bresslin who has been working for the last several years to find holes in various prison systems, 14 of which he’s successfully escaped.

After a brief introduction involving Breslin’s escape from his latest job, he and his associates (Amy Ryan, 50 CentVincent D’Onofrio) are approached by a CIA agent (Caitriona Balfe) offering $5,000,000 to Breslin to test out the government’s top secret, and privately run, new rendition facility for those criminals too dangerous to house on U.S. soil once Guantanamo Bay is closed down for good.

Breslin accepts the job, despite the fact that his location will be kept completely secret from his team, meaning he will be going in blind without back-up (breaking all of his usual rules). Of course, it doesn’t take long before things go wrong.

Total Recall

total-recall-blu-rayIt begins with a dream of Mars and a construction worker (Arnold Schwarzenegger) with aspirations for another life waking up in bed in a cold sweat next to his beautiful wife (Sharon Stone). Director Paul Verhoeven‘s 1990 adaptation of the Philip K. Dick short story “We Can Remember It for You Wholesale” might feel a little corny in spots (especially after more than 20 years) but it remains one of Schwarzenegger’s best films.

Despite warnings from a friend (Robert Costanzo) about rumors of lobotomized patients, Doug Quaid’s (Schwarzenegger) obsession with Mars leads him the Rekall, a company that uses memory implants to give its clients experiences of fabulous vacations including the chance to improve the fantasy by living out his vacation as a secret agent who will save the entire planet and fall in love with the woman of his dreams. Of course it doesn’t make too much arm-twisting to get Doug to buy the whole package. And that’s where the adventure really begins.
