Returning with new episodes for the first time in a decade, “Summer Block Buster” kicks of a new summer vacation for Phineas (Vincent Martella) and Ferb (David Errigo Jr.) with a musical number at the end of the day of the last day of school. Returning home, the pair and their friends make way for the neighborhood’s block party creating multiple inventions including a giant Whack-a-Pest, a giant dart balloon game, a giant cotton candy machine, and flying bumper cars. At the same time Doofenshmirtz (Dan Povenmire) has come out of retirement and his latest invention leads to trouble all around when the Vaporizer-inator hits Linda (Caroline Rhea) turning her into a giant cloud.

Happiest Season movie reviewHappiest Season puts a twist on your typical meet the parents film as Harper (Mackenzie Davis) invites her girlfriend Abby (Kristen Stewart) home with her for the holidays. However, on the road, Harper reveals her conservative parents (Victor Garber and Mary Steenburgen) don’t know that she is gay or that Abby is her girlfriend. This leads Abby to play the role of roommate in need of a place to stay over the holidays. It doesn’t take long for the role to weigh heavy on Abby as the film’s romcom shenanigans also give Harper’s parents the wrong impression of her.

The set-up of a strong conservative patriarch with a family too scared to tell him the truth reminded me of Merry Happy Whatever with Stewart playing a combination of the Brent Morin and Ashley Tisdale characters. Although the film is primarily centered on Harper, her sisters (Alison Brie and Mary Holland) also have their own secrets and resentments. The cast is further filled out by Dan Levy as Harper’s support line, Aubrey Plaza as Harper’s secret high school girlfriend, and Jake McDorman as Harper’s high school boyfriend who Harper’s parents are cluelessly trying to set-up with Harper over the holidays.

Clipped - Reunion

Clipped closes out it’s First Season with a high school reunion finale for most of the employees of the barber shop. Along with introducing us to the prom date Danni (Ashley Tisdale) dumped in favor of A.J. (Mike Castle), and allow Ben (Ryan Pinkston) to confront an old bully (or at least attempt to), “Reunion” also reveals Charmaine’s (Diona Reasonover) secret wish to have been a cheerleader in high school.

Clipped - The Gambler

Mothers and marriages are the major themes of “The Gambler” as Buzzy’s (George Wendt) co-workers discover that his gambling addiction is not only getting him in hot water at home but possibly also costing his mother who relies on her son to pay for her medication. Ben’s (Ryan Pinkston) closeness to his own mother will play into the company poker game, both as the butt of jokes and as a way for A.J. (Mike Castle) and Mo (Matt Cook) to force their boss’ hand. At the same time the marriage of one of the Doyles makes Joy (Lauren Lapkus) question her own marriage and begin looking at Mo in a new light.
